Peter Kiewit was known for his generosity and made it a priority to invest back into communities. One of Peter's first large public donations was to Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. The donation was for Anna Kiewit Residence Hall, a women’s dorm at the university named in honor of his late mother. Pictured is Peter's wife Evelyn, former Creighton President Rev. H.W. Linn Jr., SJ, and Peter at the Kiewit Hall groundbreaking in 1965. In 1968, because of Peter's many contributions and service to Creighton, the university made him an honorary doctor of laws. In 1978, he was named an Honorary Founder of the university, only the second time in the school’s 100-year history that the honor was given.

The Highway 5 Reinstatement Project in British Columbia is being recognized with two prestigious industry awards. The first is the 2024 Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) Infrastructure Achievement Award. This award recognizes the delivery and operations of transportation infrastructure projects that contribute to the safety of Canadian residents. The award winner is selected for its innovative design, construction and operations. Additionally, the project received an Award of Merit for Transportation & Bridges from the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies British Columbia (ACEC-BC). This award celebrates outstanding accomplishments, innovation, and technical excellence in consulting engineering. Pictured below, you’ll see our team accepting the award at the ACEC-BC Awards for Engineering Excellence Gala in Vancouver. In November 2021, critical highway infrastructure in BC was significantly damaged after torrential rainfall. Highway 5 between Hope and Merritt was completely closed, with six collapsed bridge spans and abutments and 24 sites impacted by debris or washout. To complete permanent repairs, the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) chose the Alliance delivery model, the first use of an Alliance on a transportation project in BC, in which the project owner, contractor and designer form an integrated project team to optimize delivery. The Highway 5 (three bridges) project was executed by the Coquihalla Alliance Team comprised of owner MoTI, and the KEA5 Partnership – Kiewit and Emil Anderson as the constructor and Kiewit as the designer. In less than two years, the team designed and constructed six new permanent bridge crossings – Juliet, Jessica, and Bottletop Bridges – under budget, ahead of target schedule and with strong inclusion of local and Indigenous businesses. In addition to incorporating climate change resilience, more than 4,500 native plants were planted at these bridge sites to help return the environment to its natural landscape. This might be one of the coolest places a Kiewit water bottle has traveled. 🏔️ Kiewit Geotechnical Engineer Nirajan Gaihre made the long trek to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) in Nepal – an elevation of 13,550 feet! The trip was a demanding five-day journey through the Himalayan landscape of the Annapurna Ranges. While it wasn’t the most relaxing time off, Nirajan says he was able to rest and rejuvenate in cozy mountain teahouses and meet so many friendly locals.

Brian Medcalf is not only a design area manager at Kiewit, he also proudly serves in the Nebraska Army National Guard. He says his two roles compliment each other. "I believe my experience at Kiewit makes me a better army officer, and I think my Army experience makes me a better leader at Kiewit." When Kiewit acquired Weeks Marine, Inc., it brought together ENR's top two marine contractors, resulting in a maritime powerhouse. “Before Weeks, Kiewit performed a number of marine projects on both the east and west coast and in the Gulf of Mexico, but most of that work was in support of heavy, large construction projects. This prestigious recognition is based on an assessment of 64 criteria and is a testament to the combined efforts of Sound Transit and the entire project team in their commitment to improving social, economic and environmental conditions of the community. As the design-build contractor, our scope of work includes constructing a 7.8-mile light rail extension with three new stations. The project is expect to open in 2026. One of our latest projects in British Columbia is the Dewdney Bridge Replacement, which will protect a vital connection for area communities. Originally built in 1958, Dewdney Bridge connects Highway 7 and includes a connection to Highway 1. The bridge is near the end of its serviceable life, and the most cost-effective decision was to replace the bridge. The new bridge structure will provide higher clearance for river navigation, improve the environmental impact of the river crossings, ensure an alternative route in case Highway 1 closes, and accommodate all bridge users. Currently, the project is just starting the construction of the first in-water pier falsework, which will continue for the next two months on all project piers. Crews recently completed the east abutment ground improvement work and are starting to import dike fill to build the new dike on the east side. With the completion of the ground improvement works on the east side, the team will mobilize its 300-ton crane to the west abutment to start ground improvements there. The bridge remains open while our team is working on the replacement. Completion is scheduled for fall 2026.
