🔴 🔴 🔴 … and just like that my 5 years at Slack has come to an end! What an incredible journey with an incredible organisation. It was the opportunity of a lifetime and I’m so very thankful to all of those who were a part of it! This brings me to the purpose of this post… I’m so very excited to announce the launch of Bryd (think hy-brid 😜 ) a Slack first consultancy ~ built by former Slack employees with extensive experience in implementing and managing Slack (Laurence Fitch and I). Slack isn’t just another messaging tool, it’s a way of working and implementing a new way of working often needs an expert partner who has seen and done it before… which we have. During my time at Slack I worked with hundreds of customers, across 14 different countries, and they would all tell me the same thing: “We love Slack, our team loves Slack, but we know there’s so much more that we could be doing with it”. I found that this was particularly true for organisations that were resource constrained and struggled with the changing economic landscape. Forcing them to leave value and ROI on the table. After 8.5 incredible years at Slack, it is time for me to say goodbye. I will never forget my first day at our 12 person Vancouver office where we shared desks and took turns bringing out the trash. Now, I walk away having helped build the sales team as we grew from $6M to $1.5B+ in revenue. As I fondly reflect on my time at Slack I wanted to share a few lessons: 1. Company culture is defined by values and how YOU uphold them. One of my favorite values at Slack is craftsmanship – taking pride in the quality of your work and in Stewart’s words, “painting the back of the drawer”. 2. Being good at hiring is the best way to impact the trajectory of your team. Be present with candidates and thoughtful about your process. Go back to your values and ensure you are recruiting with them in mind. 3. Learning is the only way to sustainably drive performance. Find ways to challenge yourself and your team to solve problems with a fresh lens. Thank you Robert Frati for introducing me to Lindsay McGregor’s research as it has made a lasting impression on me! 4. Focus focus focus. When your week feels like chaos, force yourself to take a breather. Reflect on 2 - 3 areas where you can make the greatest impact and prioritize those things. 5. Drive influence through empathy and curiosity. Whether you are working with customers, partners, or colleagues, understand what their world looks like and make it easy for them to get onboard. Thank you to all the amazing people at Slack and Salesforce who have been a part of this journey. Special thank you to Adnan, Bruce, Robert, and Stewart for all your support over the last few years, the entire Mid-Market team for making it a wonderful ride, and many others along the way. It has been the best work of my life and I will carry it with me always. ❤️
