This is an outstanding achievement which is also underpinned by training staff and graduate students to become trauma-informed and anti-racist. Wellbeing and productivity rise when students and staff treat one another in a compassionate and person centred manner. Interpersonal mindfulness (the topic of my recently completed PhD) facilitates the qualities of empathy and self-compassion which are essential for productive and nurturing communities.

Affiliation is an interesting thing. Human behaviour traces its origins to organisation around tribal structures that were necessary for survival. The brutal competition to survive has gone, but competition remains, and these links to common kin, to recognisable association, to rallying around a flag, still form a big part of what we consider to be our identities. And so it was with London Business School’s army of committed and engaged staff, faculty, students, and alumni, as they toppled a business school giant, and defended their Inner Circle MBA Business School World Series title. After 348 votes it was London Business School, not Harvard Business School, on the top rung as they eked out a 56-vote victory, 202 to 146. It was not always a done deal, though. LBS raced out to an early lead of around 40 votes, before HBS stormed back to within 10 votes early on day two, benefitting from a huge wave of support from its alumni. What was a tsunami at first was no more than an ebb thereafter, however, as LBS stretched its lead back to nearly 60 in the hours ahead. There was something else at play here, though. Whereas last year’s final brought in a massive 603 votes, most of those were from people directly linked to the finalists themselves: LBS, and UCI Paul Merage. This year there was broader support, and most of it went in the direction of LBS. One by one students, staff, faculty, and alumni of places as widely spread as Baylor, MIT, HEC, Chicago Booth, NYU Stern, Cambridge Judge, McGill, Wharton, UBC Sauder, INSEAD, SMU Cox, and the University of Tulsa – among many more – threw their support behind LBS. So, affiliation matters. But it also seems everyone loves an underdog. After back-to-back undefeated runs to the Inner Circle MBA Business School World Series title, though, it’s unlikely that LBS will be seen that way again. Or perhaps I am trying to find a story where a story doesn’t exist. Perhaps LBS won because it is a truly extraordinary place, full of truly extraordinary people.
