The #NHS #WorkforcePlan It has been really insightful to gauge response over the past week, with an initial flurry of support with key headlines of #investment and increased training places. But as the week has gone on, the question I hear coming through is ‘how?’ During the past 7 years of working with the NHS I have read so many documents like this, full of great ideas and evidence of what should be done but what often then happens is a failure of support for implementation. Just R was built to support the NHS with the long term sustainable solutions it needs to increase the substantive workforce within Trusts. What we do works and we have so many case studies of success, the key thing Trusts need to understand is ‘long term, sustainable’ generally isn’t also ‘quick and easy’ but it’s absolutely actionable! A special shout out to all those that are following up on results given the full publication of the annual staff survey results today. I want to celebrate the likes of Liz O'Hara at UCLH and Sue Steen FCIPD, Áinne Dolan-Williams FCIPD at MTW who continue to lead some of the 'best place to work' tables, and recognition for the effort their teams do in helping to facilitate sustained, #transformationalchange. However, as someone whose worked in both what the HSJ would label the "best" and "worst" acute and specialist trusts in the country, I'm particularly thinking of those operating in the more challenged parts of the system right now. One thing I don't miss from being wholly within the NHS is the "judgment" that comes with a lot of the headlines (e.g. the HSJs "best and worst acute trusts to work"). The NHS Staff Survey is one of the biggest, ongoing #staffengagement and experience surveys of its kind and its data tells us so much. But, like most tools, it is something that can be used for good or for ill, and I hope that Boards up and down the country use it as an opportunity for learning and transformation rather than a stick to beat themselves with. Every organisation is unique, and no organisation works in silo. How (a lack of) system working or other factors can impact on an organisation's staff survey results is rarely thought about. So, I would like to also extend my support for those more challenged organisations.
