"As a 34 year old woman in tech working for the last 12 years, it’s taken me a while to better understand which type of workplace environment allows me to bloom and thrive. In some ways, I’ve been a career goldilocks, trying my best to see what’s not working both internally and externally. Worked at big Fortune 500 companies like Apple, Snap, Meta? Check. Worked at venture-backed startups? Check. Tried my hand at several entrepreneurial projects? Check check check. I’ve lived several lives by choosing to pivot into different tech functions, different workplace environments, even different employment types. After much trial and error, I found the most perfect balance of workplace environment I’ve been wanting all along..." Janet Lee, Career Development & Business Coach at EmbraceNow, assesses three different workplace sizes and options to consider for your next career leap. 👉 Full post: https://bit.ly/4dfHQEl #womenintech #startups #bigtech #entrepreneurship #careerswitch

Big vs. Bold: What size company is best for your career? Established Company vs. a Startup I have worked for a variety of big and small companies throughout my career. Understanding what type of company you want to work for is important. You'll be spending a large part of your time there, so it's important to find an environment that fits. Some + in working for an Established Company: Stability and Security: Large companies - steady paycheck, comprehensive benefits package, and clear path for advancement. Structure and Specialization: Established companies have defined roles, processes, and procedures Work-Life Balance: Larger companies often allow for a healthier work-life balance. However, established companies can also come with 🧳 👉Slower Pace 👉Limited impact 👉Less Autonomy Some + in working for a Startup: Fast-Paced and Dynamic: Startups are all about agility and innovation. High Growth Potential: You'll have a front-row seat to the company's growth and your work can have a significant impact. Ownership and Equity: Startups often offer equity to motivate and encourage buy in However, startups also have some drawbacks, including 👉Uncertainty and Risk 👉Limited Resources 👉Less structure Which one is right for you? Think about your career goals: Do you want to specialize in a specific area, or gain broad experience across different functions? Evaluate your risk tolerance: Are you comfortable with some uncertainty in exchange for high potential rewards? If you are making a career move make sure you score the company’s, environment, culture, and health in context of the company size. It can help save you time, money, resources, and your mental health. #startup #culture #career

💡Empowering Startups with Strategic Tech Leadership | Fractional CTO & Product Innovation Expert | Driving Growth Through Technology | NASA Alum | 🌈 DEI Advocate
Launching a startup is an exciting, all-consuming endeavor. It can get easy to focus solely on building your product and gaining traction. As a founder, you also have an opportunity and responsibility in shaping your organization’s culture. One of the most important values you can implement from day one is inclusion. Inclusive leaders make diversity, equity and belonging a priority. They recognize that startups with inclusive cultures are better able to attract talent, spur innovation, and connect with a broader customer base. Here are a few ways to put inclusive leadership into action as you build your startup: - Assemble a diverse founding team. Surround yourself with co-founders and early employees who bring different backgrounds and perspectives. - Implement equitable policies. Be proactive about establishing leave, flexible schedules, and fair compensation. - Solicit input. Create feedback channels like surveys and open office hours to hear from employees across roles and demographics. - Model inclusive behavior. Challenge your own biases. Listen first. Be open to feedback that can make you a better leader. Founders have a unique chance to set the standard for inclusive leadership in their startup's formative years. When this foundation is laid early, inclusion becomes engrained in your culture and your team is empowered to build the future. #inclusiveleadership #startups #futureofwork

Thanks for the tag Alain Bindels! Lots of great points in the articles. Startups are a great place to have real impact. Two things come to mind (this early on a public holiday 😅) 1. If you want to join a startup, think about how to articulate your value - defining what problems you are able to solve for them is key. See my previous post on creating killer resume value propositions 2. Commitment is critical. Only join when you are, or can quickly get, passionate about the product or service. This will carry you through the inevitabe tough times! Actually there’s a third - be realistic about your tolerance for risk. No products for sale = reliant on investment.

🔥 Igniting Conversations Today, Someone in HR recently quizzed me: "Why a health tech startup?" The tone wasn't of curiosity but rather one of surprise, almost a suggestion that it's a somewhat 'lesser' choice for someone with a background in advertising and a keen interest in branding and strategy. Well, let's unpack that, shall we? 🎒 Yes, startups could be seen as comfortable spaces where mid-senior-level professionals can cruise through the end of their careers. But if you think that's all there is to it, you're missing out on a world of opportunities and challenges. Firstly, the idea that health tech startups are quiet, cushy places is far from my reality. It’s not a "yes-man" ecosystem here. With each day I spend in my role, I gain more authority and leadership. The startup landscape thrives on agility, multiple roles, and, most importantly, diversity of thought. You're not confined to one lane; you’re given the freedom to think across disciplines. Secondly, the startup world is waking up to the immense value of branding and marketing much earlier than before. No longer are these sectors considered only when a startup is gearing up for Series B. Thanks to the power of personal branding and the democratization of design and advertising, startups are investing in these areas sooner. 📈 And let's talk about growth 🌱. The personal and professional space that startups offer is unparalleled. It requires a strong gut and unyielding determination, but the rewards are invaluable. So, if you're still wondering why I chose a health tech startup, it's because it's an environment where I can push boundaries, make a difference, and grow in unimaginable ways. Would love to hear your thoughts! BTW: Do you like my hat collection? #StartUpLife #HealthTech #PersonalGrowth #Branding #NotAYesMan

Unlocking the Hidden Potential of Ambitious Introverts in Tech or 🚀 The Genesis of the Intra Corporate Startup Village. 🌟 In my capacity as a seasoned business consultant, I have been privileged to engage in extensive projects within the fintech realm, encompassing the optimization of business processes, the strategic recruitment of top-tier management, and much more. Throughout these endeavors, my interactions with both managerial figures and engineers have afforded me profound insights. 💼🔍 It became evident that engineers, a cohort I've come to characterize as "ambitious introverts," posed a unique conundrum. A central challenge emerged: how to foster an environment in which these remarkable individuals could become enduring assets to their organizations, avoiding the pitfalls of burnout and the common tendency to change roles every five years. 🤔💼 While investigating global corporate giants' strategies, which ranged from extravagant perks to dedicated personal masseurs, one particular conversation with an engineer crystallized the solution: "What is your most cherished time at work, the moments where you are most profoundly engaged?" 🕰️💡 The answer was "A significant allocation of 20% of paid time for personal projects, a period during which I am wholly invested." 💼✨ However, beneath the surface lay an intriguing paradox: these talented engineers held a treasure trove of insights regarding product development and auxiliary services, yet many remained reticent to share. Their ideas languished, smoldering within, obscured by a sense of unspoken frustration. 😔🤐 This revelation prompted a transformative idea - the creation of an atmosphere conducive to radical idea-sharing, a concept that would evolve into the startup village. My overarching mission became clear: to nurture an environment where engineers felt both empowered and compelled to share their most audacious ideas. 🚀💡 At its core, this endeavor sought to cultivate unity and collaboration. The ultimate objective was straightforward: to provide a platform where engineers' voices resonated, their influence was indomitable, and their ideas emanated organically from within the organization. 🤝🌱 The outcome? A dynamic community of impassioned engineers, self-assured in their contributions, and an abundant pool of internally generated concepts that transcended conventional top-down directives. 🌊🌟 In essence, it boils down to kindling interest and engendering a profound sense of appreciation. Engineers do not depart in silence when they feel valued and recognized. 🙌🌟 Should this concept pique your curiosity, and you yearn to explore the transformative potential of a startup village within your organization, I invite you to initiate a dialogue. Together, we can embark on a voyage of innovation, empowering your engineers and propelling your enterprise to new heights. 🔥 🚀 #Intrapreneurship #StartupVillage #EmployeeEngagement #motivation

As a student on the brink of entering the professional world, the choice between starting your career in a small startup or a big corporation is a significant one. Today, I'd like to share my perspective on this decision. For me, the allure of a small startup is magnetic. Here's why: 🌱 Starting from Scratch: Small startups offer the unique opportunity to witness and contribute to the creation of something from the ground up. It's a chance to understand the intricate process of building a business, from idea to execution. 🧐 Diverse Roles: In a small startup, you're not confined to a single role. You wear many hats, which means exposure to various aspects of the business. This diversity of experience is invaluable for personal and professional growth. 🚀 Impactful Contributions: Your actions in a small startup have a direct and immediate impact. It's rewarding to see how your efforts translate into results and growth for the company. 🌟 Learning Culture: Startups often have a culture of continuous learning and innovation. It's a dynamic environment that fosters creativity and adaptability. However, the choice ultimately depends on your goals and preferences. Big corporations offer stability, extensive resources, and well-established structures, which can be appealing to many. So, if you're at the crossroads of this decision, consider your aspirations and what kind of learning experience you seek. Are you drawn to the excitement of building something new, or do you prefer the stability of an established giant? Share your thoughts on where you'd like to begin your career journey! 🚀🤔 #licampustocareer #StartupLife #CorporateWorld

Ever wondered why some thrive in startups while others retreat? A recent discussion with a young IIT graduate revealed his struggle with cultural shock at a startup after leaving a major European brand. He felt pressured by inconsistent policies and ultimately resigned, saying, "It was hurting me a lot." This experience underscores the importance of understanding workplace culture and ensuring it aligns with your personal values. While startups offer dynamic growth opportunities, they might lack the stability more established companies provide. To navigate your next career move effectively: Research: Check platforms like AmbitionBox and Glassdoor for insights into company culture and employee experiences. Connect: Talk to current employees via LinkedIn and discuss with your peers who might have direct insights. Evaluate Your Goals:Decide if you're seeking fast-paced growth, which startups excel at, or if stability is a priority, which might be better found in larger organizations. Choosing the right environment is crucial—it’s about where you can grow, contribute, and feel valued. Every career move shapes not just your resume but your daily life. Choose wisely. #KeepPerseveringKeepInspiring #BeingHumanelyResourceful #HumanResourcesThoughtLeader #startup #professionalgrowth
