I spoke with a FMCG company on Friday. We got on to the subject of nepotism. When it comes to helping young people, access to opportunities can be easier for some than others. She reminded me of a video which perfectly illustrates this. I saw it on Youtube sometime ago. After our meeting I went and re-watched it. Watching the video again called a few things to memory. It triggered an old memory of being a teen and during my GCSE years being impacted by a series of events - beyond my control - which culminated with me being homeless about year-to-18 months later and without, at the time, having achieved my full academic potential. It defined my starting line. But, though like some of those young people in the video, I didn’t start from the front of the race, I also did not start at the very back either. In life, someone might have it better than you, and just as often, someone else has it worse than you too. It called to mind a mantra my Mum has said over the years: ”It’s not where you start in life that matters, it’s where you end up.” For me that event was nearly 30 years ago. I ran my race flat out and turned out not too shabby :) I guess rather serendipitously, I’ve ended up working for a company on a mission to level the playing field for young people by creating parity of access to employability and skills to help them discover their best and brightest future. Let me tell you about my time in New Orleans!👏🏾😮💨 Had THE best time at the Jobs for the Future (JFF) Horizon’s conference. I presented a #DEI lightening round and discussed the importance of #skillsfirst and why organizations should embed this work into their #talentmanagement strategy. This work is so important to me because it’s not an intellectual exercise. I have family members who are need of second chances and in need of opportunities because they don’t have a four-year degree. I will continue to stand “Ten Toes Down” on skills-first. Oh, and this was my first double-breasted suit.
