Performance improvement plans (PIP) give under performing employees a chance to succeed. But often they're seen as a red flag. A formal document that helps to track and guide work performance, PIPs identify specific areas where employees need to take corrective action.

Microsoft's former VP of HR says you should leave a company right away if you're put on a performance-improvement plan: "Surviving it is like a sign on your back." Chris Williams said PIPs are rarely a plan to help someone improve at work, and it's better to move on ASAP. "Many find that an opportunity for a clean start elsewhere is a net benefit. They can start over in a different role, perhaps more suited to their skills," he said. "Or in an environment more compatible with their temperament. Though painful, the process of PIP followed by escape and renewal works to many people's longer-term advantage." If you've been put on a PIP, he added, it will remain a part of your history with that company. Any hiring manager in the firm will be well aware of your struggles — and that's likely to loom large in any decision they may make about you. Ghostwriters are not mind readers. I had an experience similar to the OP's happen over a year ago, but unfortunately, it was a learning experience for me. The guy wanted hard copies of a book that we hadn't yet started to pass out at a retreat in 3 months! Not a pdf, but a fully edited published copy . . . I should have known when it took him over a week to sign the agreement and make the down payment. It was nothing but trouble. I'd assembled a team of pros to edit on a chapter-by-chapter basis and get it to print, but the client wouldn't get back to me. Or if he did, he'd want a complete rewrite of a chapter that we'd already revised a couple of times! 😣 Or he'd start writing a chapter that we hadn't started on his own in a different style from the rest of the book . . . I don't think we completed a single chapter. Finally, he ghosted me completely. Not a fun experience, but I learned. I've adjusted my contract wording and my boundaries. I'm a ghostwriter, not a mind reader. It's your book, not mine--while I DO relieve you of the time burden of writing, you still need to provide me the information you want me to write and feedback on what I produce so I can adjust. And if you want it in a short timeframe, you must understand that you may have to sacrifice perfection! Still, no experience is wasted. One can learn a lot from the unpleasant ones!

Hardcore calendar blocking advocate here to ask you: What would it hurt to make one or two hours of your day sacred? Most people have a certain time of the day they generally look forward to the most. For me, it’s the morning hour before other people slink into the office. On the occasions when I’m tired and consider hitting “SNOOZE,” I usually decide against it. I crave that hour of peace in the morning. Even as a new mom. With a colic baby. Sleeping less than five hours a night. I get up for the peace. I also look forward to 11 pm+, when the house is quiet. I put on country breakup music (which alarms my husband every time, so we no longer share a Spotify account) and make a giant pot of vegan curry soup. Whenever these hours happen for you, they should be cherished, and they should be yours and yours alone. Work schedules, soccer practice, and other commitments can get in the way, but I’m here to encourage you to fight for your favorite hours. Reclaim them. There are 24 hours in a day. Claiming 1-2 of those for yourself and the activities that fill your bucket is a gift that will make the other 22-23 hours more productive and peaceful. Open to trying it? Here's what you can do right now: 1️⃣ Ask yourself: what are the one or two hours I most love? 2️⃣ Open up your calendar (in whatever format you use to manage it) 3️⃣ Create a “busy” block for that time, for the next month. 4️⃣ Spend as long as it takes today moving any existing commitments that interfere with that time. 5️⃣ Get excited. You’ve reclaimed your favorite hour of the day for the next 30 days. 🧨 If you love what happens in the next 30 days, extend the calendar invite to never end. If you’re early in your career and you are worried about partying, weekends and time off, how will you reach 10,000 hours? If you don’t put the work in, you won't maximize your potential. There are zero short cuts. You have to push yourself to become the hardest working person you know. The first 12 years in this creative business, I worked 6 days/70 hrs a week. That’s over 55k hours before getting my first big break. Another 45k hours since then. When owning your own business you will work every waking minute so it’s most likely a bit more. One of my priorities for next quarter? 👋 IN. PERSON. WORK. 👋 I'm done being a little WFH gremlin in my apartment. Moving to Manhattan was my way of setting myself up to meet people and make real connections with peers and clients. I'm not paying this 10% city tax and doubling my rent for nothing! 💸🔥 So, how am I making an intentional change? 🗣️ 1. Voicing it. Hello, I post things prematurely sometimes to hold myself accountable and put the law of attraction into motion. 💼 2. Conferences. I've already been invited to one, and I'm researching more to sign up for myself. I can't wait to learn from others and find more mentors in my field. 🤳 3. Collabs. I attended a video shoot last month and am hungry to keep filming. There's nothing I love more than collaborating with other creatives and bringing ideas to life. Plus, video content with multiple people performs so well!! I'm tired of talking to myself on a laptop. 😆 🎭 4. Improv. Working in social media and content creation requires quick thinking. I'm looking into signing up for an Improv class to improve my skills while meeting other people who lack a sense of shame. ☕️ 5. Coffee chats. People ask me to coffee, I ask people to coffee, and the world keeps turning. The weather is getting nicer, and so am I. If you're in the New York area, I'd love to meet over the next few months! Let's get caffeinated and write off a latte or lunch. These are a few promises I'm putting out there to set myself up for a great Q2. I'm ready to stay motivated and exchange that energy with others. 🎒👧🏻 The first day as first employee When I told my friends I joined a (very) early-stage business a few months ago, one of their first questions was always, 'Did you feel nervous on your first day?’ (Disclaimer: No, but now that I think about it, I'm don't know why 😅) My first day at Hyperline - which wasn't called Hyperline yet - was just Lucas and me in a small WeWork office. In my past jobs, the first day involved a friendly and cool onboarding process and meeting the team through 1to1 sessions all day (👋 50 Partners, Serena) Yet, my first day at Hyperline as the first employee was unlike anything I'd experienced before, naturally! Lucas shared a Notion note outlining all the key tasks for the upcoming weeks/months (basically, everything!). He gave me my computer and office keys. I set up my emails, Slack, and a few tools (not too many, honestly), and that was it. No need for customer insights, company values, or HR processes. Onboarding took just 30 minutes. Everything needed to be done, and that was so exciting. Instead of feeling overwhelmed and stressed, wondering where to start, how to plan my work, and what we needed first, I just felt very happy about what was coming next. Now that I look back on that day, I realize that the recruitment process and the weeks leading up to my arrival were crucial for a smooth start: 1️⃣ During my hiring, Lucas offered me the opportunity to work with him for half a day, which was more engaging than a typical case study and gave me a sneak peek into our upcoming workdays 2️⃣ A few months before my arrival, Lucas had created a WhatsApp group for the coming soon team members. When I worked at Microsoft, I stopped by a co-workers office one day and he said: "You're really smart. You're going to do great things in your career." He has no memory of this conversation. For me, this is one of the most important conversations of my life. It has become a core memory. At the time, I was just 4 years into my career. I really admired Mike (name changed for privacy). He was very senior and someone I looked up to. I trusted his opinion. So when he told me I had great potential, I believed him! It changed how I viewed myself, permanently. I became more confident and ambitious. It helped me believe I was capable of so much more than I realized. This small compliment, that he doesn't even remember, has had positive ripple effects in my life for over 20 YEARS. Great leaders give people more confidence than they had before. You don't have to be a manager to be a great leader. Mike wasn't. Here's the rule I try to live by: Whenever a positive thought about a co-worker pops into your head, say it out loud. (I still have a lot of work to do in this area!) Never miss an opportunity to give a compliment.
