Executive Assistant

I became an Executive Assistant by accident 👀 . Back in 2005, I managed Nihon Whisky Lounge 🥃, the hottest new whiskey bar in San Francisco at the time. In retrospect, it was one of my favorite jobs. I met so many amazing people, learned so much about food and alcohol, and have tons of memories, both fun and quite embarrassing 🤭. While working there, I learned how crucial it was to work hard, build relationships, and provide great customer service. In fact, it was a regular I met at Nihon (SD wattup!) who provided a strong reference that would help me land an Executive Assistant role at Dropbox in 2011 (after getting rejected by 5 companies), which then launched my career and more opportunities ever since. I’m skipping a bunch of stuff about how I moved to Paris 🥐, moved back to SF 🌉, opened up a couple frozen yogurt shops called Yocup 🍨, and worked in hotels 🏨 in between all that, but story for another time. At Dropbox, I supported over 45 executives including team leads, managers, and VPs — and at one point I had assisted nearly the entire C-suite of the company. I volunteered to cover maternity leaves, emergency coverage, sudden departures, and onboarding for new execs. When I left in 2018, I started my own business unintentionally, where I did project work for a lot of folks I’d supported in the past. Currently, I’ve been at Clubhouse 👋 for the past three years, where I’ve gotten to work with amazing founders and an equally great team of people. I have a lot of EA experience that I’ve always wanted to share with others, so I started writing ✍ sporadically during the last 8 years, but never got around to posting anything because my imposter syndrome and inner negative voices were like “hey there!”. But you know what? I’m in my early 40s now, and you know what happens when you enter your 40s? You start to give less shits. 😜 So a few months ago, against everything negative in my head, I quietly started posting about EA tips, lessons, advice, stories, and more on all my social platforms. It’s been a fun passion project that I will continue to add to, and I’m finally comfortable sharing it more broadly! To all the execs I’ve supported and EAs I’ve ever worked with — thank you 🙏. I’ve learned so much professionally and personally through working with you, and I wouldn’t be who I am today without each and every one of you. If you come across any of my socials and read something that sounds like it’s about you, it probably is, and I hope it makes you laugh 😂 and smile 😁 and reminisce 🤗. Thank you for giving me the stories and the memories I could write and post about. I’d love it if you could share my Instagram, TikTok, and Substack (links in comments) with EAs you know who might find this kind of content helpful! #udabest

I still remember your interview (shortly after I joined, not sure if you know that my Dropbox team hangout before I joined was at Nihon Lounge, I wonder if you were working that night!). We were swapping working-at-restaurant stories, and I asked you about the chaos of restaurant service on a busy night. How you know when you and the servers are on? You weren't fully sure, but said you could feel it. What do you mean feel it? I can hear silverwear hitting the floor from the other end of the dining room, and they get a new fork fast. Seems like a small thing, but it's a terrible experience to sit there with your food and no fork.

What’s up, Dropbox alum! (We missed each other by a year tho.) Your career path is impressive and all those experiences definitely inform and enrich what you bring to the table!

Okay, my favorite LI post today. 😀 Possibly for the week, although Lucy's post about EAs being circus ringmasters is WAY up there, too. 🤣 Janet, I'm sending you an Invite now so I can see your posts much more frequently. Thank you for being here on LI, and thank you for being YOU! 😊

Love this post! Going out on your own is scary but SO rewarding, at least that I have found these past few years. Congrats Janet and can't wait to see what you share! ❤️
