Building the future of paid community at Subbb

3 months ago I was laid off. And a week ago I raised a $250k pre-seed in NYC. My wife and dog had just flown into JFK from New Zealand. We'd sold everything, spent a fortune on vet bills and put down an enormous deposit on an apartment. And then boom. Laid off. Talk about financial and emotional chaos. Since then... I've built 5x apps (4x web, 1x iOS), published 24x videos on YouTube, launched a paid community for developers, been accepted into the Antler Residency in NYC and even pitched my startup to a room full of VCs. And with that I'm super stoked to announce... I've just raised a $250k USD pre-seed to build the future of paid communities at subbb.me We're making it easier than ever to launch a paid community wherever your community already exist. Discord, Whatsapp, Slack, Telegram. Familiar places. And in the first 72 hours of launch we had 395 creator signups and $496MRR of subscription payments. Purely organic. Zero marketing. I fundamentally believe the future of paid community is clubs. The global creator economy is currently worth around $156b USD. With an average CAGR of 22.5% we're expecting to hit $528b by 2030. In the US alone we're looking at $17.7b --> $142.9b (an 8x). Insane. A huge opportunity to be the best in class for paid community. Community. Not courses. Community. In fact, if you're a developer you should jump into my personal Subbb: subbb.me/jacob ⚡️ I've gotta give a special shoutout to some amazing people who have been instrumental in helping me over the past few months. Firstly, Maddison Binnie (my wife). The most incredibly talented digital marketer, designer, chef and encouraging woman on the planet. Love ya. Besart Çopa - for dragging me into the Antler building in the first place. Encouraging, guiding and just being a super good mate throughout the entire ideation, build and pre-seed journey. Legend. Jeff Becker - for taking a punt on a kiwi in NYC. For the strategy sessions, startup inspiration and believing in me as a builder. Another legend. A special mention to the rest of the Antler team who've been monumental throughout the entire residency: Cody Sugarman, Roslyn Jin, Kaila J. Lim, Alex Koren, Annie Ripp. Special mention to Pave Sturman for the daily office routine and lunch at Mido's food truck. All in all, this was not the NYC I expected. But maaaan I'm super stoked at how far we've come. I'm in NYC until July. Let's chat: [email protected] https://subbb.me

Finally I know what happened with the start-up you moved to NYC for! I was watching all the videos trying to catch a hidden gem with the reason 😅 But everything happens for a reason, although sometimes it take a while to see it. Maybe if that had not happened, you wouldn’t be where you are today. Keep pushing, keep building… and keep vlogging. I see you more excited and happy than in the beginning, so kepp moving! Big hug from Spain.

I tried building a community on Facebook gave up no one joined the group people in it were my Facebook friends had to prod them to post their stuff related to what the group was. Had so many plans for the group.

Way to go. I am glad things are working out for you in a direction that you are happy with. I also would have been just as happy to see a post in which you (or someone in a similar situation) immediately started delivering pizzas or working at a warehouse. I just love the immediate action to better the situation at hand. Far too many people sit around and feel sorry for themselves, then hop on LinkedIn once a day for a few minutes and hit the auto-apply button on a job ad or two. Way to get after it!

I just wanted to jump in and say this is a "Best in Class" LinkedIn post. It's got everything: engaging intro, below-the-fold intrigue, short informative sentences, shout outs, a humanizing picture... it's like looking at the Sistine Chapel of posts... 😎

Love everything about this (except the bit where you got laid off). Following the journey (and will very likely use Subbb).
