Imagine a lifetime of struggling to fit in, read and replicate social cues, and be spontaneous. Imagine feeling anxious every time you have to see your friends, go shopping, or attend a work event. Imagine never knowing why you struggle with these things that everyone else takes for granted. This is the reality of many. There’s a lost generation of adults with autism (ASD) who were never diagnosed because there was less awareness and narrower diagnostic criteria. Now we understand that ASD is a spectrum, but diagnosing adults is uniquely challenging because clients may have learned camouflaging strategies or have co-occurring disorders with similar symptoms. These challenges are worth confronting, though, because diagnosis can be comforting, empowering, and provide a foundation for more appropriate treatment. #psychology #help #autism #autismawareness #asd

🌿You may have been told by someone with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) that it’s easier for them to listen to you if they don’t look at your face. This is called “Gaze aversion” and it is common for children with ASD. 🌿A study which included 20 children with ASD found that: .When tracking children’s gazes, children with ASD tended to avoid eye contact when listening to a question and when thinking of how to respond to the question. .The harder the questions got the more likely it was for the child to look away. .The study described this as a “cognitive load management strategy”. So averting their gaze was a way for the child to understand and answer the questions better. 🌿Studies like these help us figure out better strategies for assisting those with ASD with understanding social queues better. But it is also a reminder that everyone listens differently and if we can understand each other then we can communicate better! Reference Doherty-Sneddon, Gwyneth, Deborah M. Riby, and Lisa Whittle. “Gaze Aversion as a Cognitive Load Management Strategy in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Williams Syndrome.” Journal of child psychology and psychiatry 53.4 (2012): 420–430. #goldcoast #singapore #alliedhealth #integrativehealth #asd #autismspectrumdisorder

Going back to basics and resharing one of my favorite graphics... Remember, practicing INCLUSION means also including and treating kids with - Behavioral disorders - Emotional disorders - Neurological disorders and - Learning disorders with equality and justice . Schools and home do better when 👉 you see doodling , as coping 👉 you see fidgeting, as regulating 👉 you see distracting, as focusing 👉 you see daydreaming, as respite When one stops seeing this as unruly and disrespectful behaviour and understands that the child lacks skills .This can make a huge difference and make home and school environment better. Stop seeing neuro divergent behaviour as bad . Look at these challenging behaviours with your x-ray vision eyes and when we shift our mindset that the child is struggling this helps one to manage the situation even better. Get curious and look for ways to help the child because each and every child deserves to be seen, heard, understood, included and treated equally. What's actually bad is IGNORANCE and LACK OF INCLUSIVITY and KNOWLEDGE. As we come closer to this awareness month remember that every month is ADHD, SPD, Autism ,Down syndrome, Mental illness awareness month because they exists 12 months of the year and not just one so treat everyone the same way round the year. #october #awarenessmonth #inclusion

#AutismSings Signs of autism can vary widely from person to person, but they typically emerge during early childhood. It's important to note that having one or a few of these signs does not necessarily mean a person has autism. Clinical Health Psychological Associate Specializing in EMDR & MBSR | Therapy for Chronic Pain, Depression, PTSD, Anxiety, Injured Workers, & Eating Disorders
Today I participated in a seminar held at UCSD titled "Affirming Neurodivergence in Eating Disorder Treatment: Considerations for Working with Autistic Patients." While it is known that eating difficulties are common among children on the #autism spectrum, there is a limited amount of research on whether these behaviors persist or evolve into adulthood. However, emerging evidence suggests that autistic adults may face higher rates of #eatingdisorders compared to the general population, indicating a need for further exploration into the impact of autism on eating in this particular age group (Kinnaird et al., 2019). During the seminar, several important insights were shared. One of the key takeaways emphasized the significance of validating the eating experiences of autistic patients. Another important consideration discussed was the accommodation of eating in social settings by reducing sensory stimuli, such as wearing noise-canceling headphones. Additionally, the seminar highlighted the importance of involving family members in meal preparation to provide support for individuals with autism and their unique dietary needs. These are just some important things to keep in mind when working with #patients on the autism spectrum disorder. #eatingdisorderawareness #eatingdisordersupport #psychology #nutritionalpsychology #autismawareness #autism #mentalhealthawareness #mood #habbitsofhealth #eatingdisorders #validation #nutritionalpsychology
