There is a very stark contrast in corporate agendas at Ciena and Infinera. The latter has been striving to reinvent itself as a fully market-driven entity with a greater focus on actual technological differentiation through integration of functionality further down the food chain, with the relatively short-term goal of an exit (please see: https://lnkd.in/ekE9e9YV). While with its messaging, there is a struggle at the former in marrying near-term marketplace hurdles with its success in becoming the dominant, international force in the optical systems business (please see: https://lnkd.in/eVQh6pge), the seemingly prevailing desire of the powerful executives in Canada is to remain indeterminately as a player in the marketplace, as partially manifested from the effective promotion of some historic revisionism on the vendor’s great achievement. On this last specific point, one can find symbols of the outward allegiance to the “Nortel” origins (please see: https://lnkd.in/edRTNmD7), while the preponderant storyline in the Canadian press appears to be that the engineers in that country were totally responsible for Ciena’s competitive position. The interesting aspect is whether future circumstances might still result in a battle for control of the corporation. A big tussle occurred early in Ciena’s existence in which fortunately, a top-level executive in favor of an aggressive move to an all-optical paradigm was the loser.

#Fyuz23 When it comes to Open RAN - It’s no longer a question of technology, as Mavenir and the wider #ecosystem have overcome that - with live and commercial deployments proving that multi-vendor interoperability is possible and happening today. The driving force today is the undisputed need by MNOs/CSPs for network efficiency and AI driven automation that is what is fuelling investment in Open and Disaggregated Networks. That is why #OpenRAN is the future for RAN. Antonio Correa, Senior RVP Southern Europe, Caribbean & Latin America at Mavenir. Telecom Infra Project Red Hat NTT DOCOMO, INC. I always believe and say that Technology Organisations should be headed by a Technology Professional of respective field of Engineering. ISRO, BARC, HAL, BSNL, Google, Microsoft, Ericsson, C-DAC etc are a few of the examples of great success stories. This new breed of CEOs& COOs, in TELECOM Sector who were initially supposed to handle Business domain, subsequently took over Technology Function as well and demeaned or be littled Technology Professionals contribution for the Companies. This led to not only the compromise on quality, but suffocation of most of the competent Telecom Professionals. Need to be considered for not causing any more damage to the sector by these new breed of beureocrats. #telecom #telecommunications #telcos

Whereas the wild card at Ciena (please see: https://lnkd.in/dZNckc9D) has been the Office of the CTO (in fibeReality’s opinion, no other executive at the supplier has garnered more respect from customers than Steve Alexander), we have become aware of signs that Infinera may have its own surprise element. In taking another look at the rather odd form of an news leak involving the latter earlier this year to Reuters (please see: https://lnkd.in/dbFhkwiv) that addressed “exploring options,” it may have been a reflection of competing tensions within the firm, and perhaps an attempt at pacifying a particular party. The inherent difficulty in having an investment firm with a seat on the board of directors is that its priorities will not necessarily be in sync with other members. Possible conflicting urgencies can get exacerbated when the period of the relationship starts to approach five years. According to fibeReality’s intelligence gathering, in recent months, there were apparently several indications that Infinera was on the brink of a spin-off to compensate Oaktree Capital, but changing economic conditions may have dictated a pullback on the plan. The current leadership at Infinera was handed a very messy situation, especially regarding disparate metro assets, that included the Coriant acquisition owned by Oaktree. The latter should have realized the conditions in conducting its due diligence. The matter of the metro was not exactly a new area of concern. In November 2015, fibeReality published, “Infinera Needs Dose of Humility Such as With Metro” (please see: https://lnkd.in/dShij_Sr) that discussed our apprehension over the handling of the Transmode acquisition. We believe that Infinera’s metro business has been significantly strengthened by the present management, ensuring its viability. The extent to which there might be a distraction which can only become magnified, will require a resolution as soon as possible, with the least impact on a future exit strategy (please see: https://lnkd.in/d6HiFRzC).
