Portion of US adults identifying as LGBTQ has more than doubled in last 12 years. The portion of U.S. adults who identify as other than heterosexual has more than doubled since 2012, a Gallup poll has found, with young people leading the way – from Generation Z through the Silent Generation, each younger group is about twice as likely as the one before it to identify as LGBTQ+. About 7.6% of U.S. adults now identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or as something other than heterosexual, the poll found. What is pride ? Pride has multiple meanings, but it is often associated with a feeling of deep satisfaction or pleasure derived from one's own achievements, qualities, or possessions. It can also refer to a sense of dignity and self-respect. Additionally, "Pride" can refer to the LGBTQ+ Pride movement, which celebrates the diversity and equality of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. My response to a 50 year qualified accountant expressing their dismay at the #ICAEW flying the #Pride flag and threatening to stop paying his fees. He stated that accountants should focus on accounting and financial reporting and that sexual preference has nothing to do with Governance and financial integrity (this point we can agree on, but for different reasons). What do you think? Should professional institutions put up or shut up? #equality #diversity "If the Institute flew the Ukraine flag in support would you threaten to stop paying your fees and say that a country being invaded has nothing to do with Governance and financial integrity? Pride is not simply to do with "sexual preference", it is actually a matter of human rights both in the UK and many territories we deal with. How do you think a member of the LGBTQIA+ community who felt included by the Institute's post would then feel seeing your response? And is that OK? As members we are not just individuals, we are a collective, and fortunately for many of us, and our clients and employers, our profession no longer consists solely of straight white men. And your suggestion to focus on "accounting and financial reporting" as our strength does us a disservice; accountants nowadays can, and do, add a lot more to a business than just that."

Just like knowing how to work TikTok when targeting Gen Z - Practice what you preach. Measurement is key to change, and our friends at the Association of LGBTQ+ Corporate Directors today published a study examining LGBTQ+ representation on Nasdaq-listed companied. Of 23,958 Board seats, only 1.2% are currently held by directors who self-identified as LGBTQ+.
