Picture this: you’re playing the latest Call of Dooty 24 Ranger Recon game on a VR headset. Your task is to stake out the enemy, but you don’t know where they are. You’re lost in the jungle and everything is dark. All of a sudden, you find them. How? Someone farted and you smelled it. But wait a second, you can’t smell things in video games, can you? Researchers at City University of Hong Kong have invented a VR- that lets you smell. Wearers put a device on their upper lip for easy access to their nostrils. Smells are then generated by the device heating different waxes that mimic scents. This would be awesome in most cases- but not so awesome if your video game is based in the sewer. Apple Vision Pro Benchmark Test 3: Virtual Content Jitter We are running a comprehensive performance testing of Apple Vision Pro and other top names in MR - the HTC VIVE XR Elite, Meta Quest 3, and Meta Quest Pro. We have performed three tests so far, and the most recent one focuses on how these devices handle virtual content jitter, a key factor in VR experience. How we did it: We used the OptoFidelity BUDDY Test System, focusing on measuring angular jitter in two scenarios: Angular Jitter when the headset was stationary and Angular Jitter during movement. Here’s an interesting paper on scene responsiveness in MR. It explores the boundary of letting the physical and digital interact.
Excited to share our latest (and proud to say award-winning) paper on #SceneResponsiveness where we explore the next stage of situated #MixedReality. Scene Responsiveness deepens the illusion of #passthrough #AR so that virtual actions and virtual characters seemingly affect the physical scene. We toggle the reality state of objects from physical to virtualized by building on situated digital twins and a novel graphics and shader pipeline. This allows the objects to be manipulated in all ways virtuality affords while maintaining visual coherence and visuotactile consistency.
