What a treat to attend mg first #cmxsummit alongside AnneSophie Brochet and Charlene Kate Ditch. We’ve been immersed in a world of community professionals who share a passion for building connected communities that give their members a sense of purpose and belonging. Three highlights for me: 1️⃣ spending time with my team. ❤️ being away from zoom and the stresses of the daily grind. Getting to know each other and uncovering fun quirky facts that serve to bring us closer. 2️⃣ attending a conference as an attendee!! Most of the time we are exhibiting or producing. It was an interesting meta-level experience to observe how CMX organized their content, networking, and comms. 3️⃣ the strongest theme I heard across all sessions centered on the importance of meeting communities where they are and empowering them to do what they’re already doing through education, funding, infrastructure, and more. This stands in contrast to forcing communities to fit inside of a box we’ve designed. Big thanks to our hosts at CMX and all of the speakers! Until next time… ✌️

My team has been putting the pieces together behind the scenes & I'm ecstatic to announce that our second annual co:mmunity conference is coming to a screen near your! Our co:mmunity conference came out of a need that we saw with our clients, collaboraters, & confidantes -- a need for community. We saw (and heard) that people were doing the work to design more equitable, inclusive, accessible, & sustainable communities, particularly for those who have been historically left out of the conversation, but felt like they were at it alone. And the team over at co:census knows that there's strength in numbers. So we went to the lab & got to cooking -- what we produced was the co:mmunity conference: a space for folx who want to see a more equitable, inclusive, accessible, & sustainable future for our communities to come together to learn, network, & chill. Based on the feedback from last year's conference, we made some changes that I know y'all are gonna love: 1️⃣ We've increased our programming to span over 2 days & cover a wider range of topics -- in this case, bigger is better 2️⃣ We're bringing in more external voices to share their knowledge -- you can't create change in an echo chamber 3️⃣ We're keeping the conference virtual but we've added an IRL networking event -- 👀 my NYC people...come through! I am writing today to personally invite you to attend MobiCom 2023 and to thank the MobiCom Technical Program Committee Co-Chairs Haitham Hassanieh (EPFL) and London Cox (Microsoft). As you know, they and their committee have done a very impressive job selecting 92 papers for presentation in our 29th annual celebration event. They will share the details of acceptance rates and other interesting statistics at the conference but what I can tell you is that MobiCom is growing and attendees will have more research results to learn about and enjoy. Our community is thriving and this level of inclusion is a very healthy thing. While this is awesome, it brought up the question of managing the presentation of these papers.  The steering committee met to discuss this issue at length. At the highest level the question was, should we go multi-track or should we extend the conference. Both have their pros and cons. For now, what we decided is that we will move the conference to a 1+4 or 4+1-day format. The reasoning behind this has to do with several factors, which were debated and then a vote was held. We have allocated 15 minutes to each paper. This is a test, which I hope will succeed. There are other options as well, including limiting the number of presentations but we didn’t quite like that. As our community grows, there is much to discuss and adapt, all of which we can do at the conference.   One more point, if you are a presenter, keep in mind that 15 mins, which includes 12 mins. of presentation and 4 mins. of Q&A is tight. You will have the inclination to speak fast but, please don’t. The timing is not only hard for you, it is also tight for the audience. So, practice, practice, practice and then practice again. It is an honor to have several hundred people listen to you. So I encourage you to prepare an excellent talk and to present with great clarity. To the rest, I hope you will make the effort to join us at our flagship, longest-running community conference.
