Newborn babies born prematurely may need careful monitoring for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a disease that can have grave consequences for a child’s vision. As a Neonatologist I spend a lot of money, often unwillingly and unnecessary with 25% of days an infant in the NICU not even receiving ICU level care ❗ So why is this happening? ⁉ Because we have no other care delivery offering for infant care delivery besides the most costly and invasive setting. That is why we are creating Firstday Healthcare using technology to bring the care to the baby instead of the baby to us. We take pride in announcing the release of the new Clinical Standard for Maternity Services V3.0 after 6 years, set to replace the current version V2.1 on March 1, 2024. This updated version brings about significant changes compared to its predecessor. First and foremost, we've revamped the concept, limiting access to clinical certification to accredited organizations only. The standard is now divided into four major sections: 1. Antenatal, Labor, and Delivery; 2. Recovery and Neonatal ICU; 3. Neonatal Complications; and 4. Postnatal Care. We've streamlined the requirements by eliminating a substantial portion that already exists in the accreditation standard, focusing solely on clinical requirements integral to maternity services. This makes the standard more user-friendly for all involved in the maternity process. The primary focus remains on the safety of both mothers and newborns, aligning with the goal of the new revision. Dirty or clean, how do you know? 🧼 👶🏽 I'm talking about the NICU! It's an unofficial way of saying which babies can go into the NICU, and which ones have to be admitted to a pediatric floor. 🤰🏽 In a delivery hospital (they have a labor and delivery unit) with a NICU, only babies born there can go into that NICU. If a baby presents to that same hospital's ED after being sent home, they cannot go back into that hospital's NICU! They would need to be admitted to that hospital's pediatric unit (if they have one) or transfer out to a 'dirty' NICU. This is what we consider a CLEAN NICU. 🧼 🦠 A NICU that accepts patients from the ED (from home) and from other NICUs is considered a DIRTY one! Everyone is welcome. This absolutely does not mean that these NICUs are dirty! I work at one and combating germs that cause infection is one of my #1 jobs! Looking at NP jobs on the web, I found a discrepancy that limits the job market for the Adult-Gerontology NP. Many job postings are listed for a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), even by clinics that do not serve the pediatric population. This occurs most likely because many are unfamiliar with the differences of each. Both family nurse practitioners (FNPs) and adult-gerontology nurse practitioners (AGNPs) are advanced practice nurses who provide care for adolescents and adults. Both are certified by board examination to care for the population each serve. The most significant difference between a family nurse practitioner and an adult-gerontology nurse practitioner is that FNPs care for pediatrics/ children (under age 12), while AGNPs care for adolescents through adults.I have attached an article found online that may help dispel the myth that the AGNP can only work in the nursing home.
