Hatfield has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Water Resources Specialist to join our Water Resources Group in Fort McMurray, Alberta. This individual will be a crucial member of our vibrant team and will contribute to the planning and execution of hydrology, hydrogeology, and climate aspects of environmental management projects in Northern Alberta. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to collect data to assess potential project - and climate change - related impacts with respect to water resources and the environment, along with contributing to environmental monitoring and environmental permitting. Hatfield geared up for this year’s Go by Bike Week, a celebration of cycling to inspire everyone in British Columbia to ride their bike! We look forward to this event each year and extend it to encourage Hatfield staff to cycle or use other methods of green commuting – we had staff running, walking, and taking transit on their way into the office. Hatfield’s staff-led Social Committee coordinated this initiative, putting on a brunch in our Vancouver offices, daily prize draw, hosting an e-bike lunch and learn, and creating friendly competition for most dedicated cyclist and rookie of the year. We also held a Go by Bike photo contest - see our contest winner’s amazing photographs below, taken on their journeys to and from work. We are proud that more than 20% of our BC-based staff participated in this environmentally friendly initiative!  We look forward to participating in this Fall’s Go by Bike Week, happening September 23 to October 6. Hatfield is presenting at this year’s Nature Based Coastal Solutions and Ecological Restoration Symposium, hosted by TransCoastal Adaptations: Centre for Nature-Based Solutions. This event will be held at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia from June 24 to 26, 2024. This event will highlight various case studies and practical examples of nature-inspired solutions for enhancing coastal climate resilience. Hatfield’s Megan Vaughan, M.Sc. R.P.Bio, Senior Marine Biologist, will be attending this exciting symposium! Megan is set to co-present in a joint talk with Pauline Martens from Northwest Hydraulic Consultants, titled “Working towards long term nature-based shoreline restoration at Whey-ah-Wichen (Cates Park), BC”. This presentation will take place on June 24, at 1:30pm (ADT). This event provides the opportunity for coastal practitioners, coastal engineers, natural and social scientists, educators, students, planners, politicians, and Indigenous groups to come together in support of efforts to reverse climate change. Hatfield knows firsthand the importance of developing solutions to combat climate change, with much of our work focusing on ways to minimize the impact on coastal environments and beyond. We look forward to collaborating alongside fellow industry professionals to apply, execute, and distribute nature-focused adaptations to climate change, and to share the most up-to-date research in the fields of coastal and estuarine science! Each year on June 21, Hatfield commemorates National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day dedicated to acknowledging the history and heritage of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. This day, which falls within the wider recognition of National Indigenous History Month, highlights our deepest respect and observance of the unique cultures, traditions, and resilience of Indigenous Peoples throughout Canada; respect we carry with us throughout the entire year. Hatfield is thrilled to have been selected as the winner of the Member’s Choice Award at last week’s EMA of BC - Environmental Managers Association of BC Awards Gala for our work on the English Bay Barge Removal project! In partnership with Vancouver Pile Driving, Hatfield implemented a comprehensive environmental management strategy and the project successfully restored Sunset Beach following removal of the barge in 2022. It was an amazing evening celebrating exceptional accomplishments in environmental management across British Columbia – and we are honored to not only have been nominated, but to have taken home this prestigious award! Last month, Hatfield attended the Water in Mining Global Summit, held in Vancouver, British Columbia on May 16 and 17. We appreciated the opportunity to converse with fellow industry professionals about water stewardship, management, and policy, considerations around water in the face of climate change, and the importance of building meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities through shared experiences, collaboration, and engagement. Nicole Fallon, Senior Hydrogeologist at Hatfield, was present at this event. Nicole particularly enjoyed Professor Lesley Warren’s presentation, which focused on the innovative use of meta-omics in mine water management and offered fresh insights on treatment solutions for mine water. Concluding our experience at this year’s Water in Mining Global Summit, we look forward to the evolution of the industry as it embraces new technologies and creative approaches to improve water management and responsible usage at mine sites, simultaneously improving the communities we live and work in.
