AI continues to transform the customer experience and bring about new opportunities for business optimisation. In recent news, fast food chain Wendy’s has announced that it plans to introduce surge pricing for its menu items, similar to that of Uber’s currently utilised surge pricing. Customers will pay more for Wendy’s fast food items during peak times, but they’ll also be incentivised to spend more during non-peak periods due to decreased prices. As a Fast Company article on the subject explains, surge pricing will enable Wendy’s to make more of a profit during its busiest times, while it will to entice more orders during its quieter times. In addition, lower prices during certain periods may enable Wendy’s to balance the busyness of its stores, encouraging price-conscious customers to dine during off-peak times. Wendy’s launch of surge pricing, which is set to take place next year, will only be a test, according to the company’s CEO Kirk Tanner. During the test phase, the business is hoping to evaluate the response to the new ‘dynamic pricing’, after which it will decide whether to make surge prices a permanent menu item.
