The Australian Government has released the 2024 National Defence Strategy (NDS), which outlines the Government’s strategic framework and sees a Strategy of Denial become the cornerstone of Defence planning - deterring conflict before it begins. This approach guides Defence’s contribution to National Defence and spans all five domains - maritime, land, air, space and cyber - while we a shift to a more integrated, focused force designed to address Australia’s most significant strategic risks. We will continue to work closely with industry, pivoting our workforces, to deliver the priorities our nation requires at speed. Together, we must make greater commitment of national resources to enable a more holistic approach to Australia’s defence and security. #Cyberthreats Whose APT44 Group? APT44, also known as Sandworm, FROZENBARENTS, and Seashell Blizzard, is a threat group backed by the Russian Federation and linked to Unit 74455 within the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU). Mandiant has been monitoring APT44’s activities for over a decade, with evidence suggesting its formation in 2009. Unlike other Russian state-backed groups, APT44 is highly versatile, engaging in a wide range of cyber espionage, attack, and influence operations. This dynamic nature sets it apart, aligning closely with the full spectrum of activities typically carried out by the GRU’s Information Operation Troops (VIO), indicating a high likelihood of subordination to this unit. A very informative piece by NATO, regarding the threats of Hybrid Warfare the alliance faces. One sentence stood out to me though referring to the PRC (Peoples Republic of China): ' It (China) uses its economic leverage to create strategic dependencies and enhance its influence'. This argument is central to my research on China, Hybrid Warfare and Debt-Entrapment. Its refreshing to see that NATO doesn't just conflated Hybrid Warfare with Cyber or Proxy Warfare, and has identified economic methods.  https://lnkd.in/emMS2uYR

Today's Command Paper looks forensically at the critical connection between personnel and technology in modern defence strategy. The key enabler to that relationship is making sure that our defence institutions are agile and world-class in the support they provide the armed forces. Investment in organisational performance across the UK defence ecosystem is paramount in a highly charged geopolitical arena, where UK allies are actively engaged in Europe and other wider concerns loom on a global stage.  While the nature of threats - from cyber warfare, to on-the-ground action - are constantly shifting, dealing with them relies on best-in-class delivery models to rapidly initiate and sustain a response. This means adopting digital, embracing the power of data and making sure that teams are equipped to make fast and informed decisions. We're seeing the results of this investment in our own work, deploying our expertise in major programmes so that the UK's defence and security services are ready to act, whatever form a threat may take.
