(Kidding) Still, when McKinsey (or Goldman, or Bain, or BCG, etc.) rolls up on a college campus, they get thousands of applications and half the student body showing up. Why? It's the blue chip for the blue chippers. Premium brand among elite circles, training, and another no-fail credential. I'd know - I was one of them. But ultimately, they are not what most young people want. What do young people want? 1. To work on tough, important problems 2. On dynamic teams (outcomes > hierarchy) 3. With opportunity to grow 4. Nvidia founder tells Stanford Business School students their high expectations may make it hard for them to succeed: ‘I wish upon you ample doses of pain and suffering.’ "One of my great advantages is that I have very low expectations,” Nvidia's billionaire CEO Jensen Huang said in a recent interview published in Fortune. We are often told that setting the bar high is key to success. After all, if you shoot for the moon and miss, at least you’ll land with the stars. "Virginia’s initiative to become a bigger part of the country’s burgeoning semiconductor chip industry charged forward Tuesday with the public launch of an alliance intended to unite academia and businesses in developing talent and establishing manufacturing and research facilities. Announced in April by Gov. Glenn Youngkin, the Virginia Alliance for Semiconductor Technology, or VAST, led by Virginia Tech, is funded by a $3.3 million grant from the state’s GO Virginia economic development initiative and includes plans to train 600 adult learners, with a focus on veterans and those from underserved communities, beginning in 2024, in addition to offering internships and certificates. VAST plans to create three 10-week Fast Track to Semiconductor Careers certificate programs: Chip Fabrication and Nano Characterization, Semiconductor Packaging and Characterization, and Semiconductor Equipment Maintenance and Repair. So what did I learn from my job at Intel Labs ? 1) Work >> Degree: As far as I looked, there were barely anyone who joined just after undergraduate studies. Those who were had a good research experience and that's where my profile stood out! 2) Huge difference between startup and tech giant research culture: Coming from a startup culture, I was a bit more inclined towards quantity more than quality. But my project advisor clearly told me that being a research based organisation, our goal is not just get higher accuracy but more importantly know the working behind. High accuracy without idea of working is not valuable and hence focus towards quality and impactful work than quantity. 3) Have a long term view: This starts from as small as creating presentations with graphs. Ensure to add context around it so you can refresh even if you visit after 6 months! 4) Only you are responsible for your work: As an industry practice, Intel too requires employees to list quarterly OKRs for tracking progress. It was my first ever OKR back when I joined and it was set as per my approval but towards the end I realised I was running a bit behind and one of the reasons was expectation of micro managing and pushing but it never happened. I thus realised that in such major tech companies, you are allowed to pretty much follow your own schedule but you also are fully responsible and need to optimise your routine for quick progress. 5) Presentation of your work of utmost importance: Communication and presentation should be from audience perspective! Adding graphs is fine but including some comments around inferences and data point in the same slide just helps the audience also stay attentive while you present! Marking points on plots and highlighting them helps in making your findings less debatable and more conclusive! So these were some of the most vital learnings from my experience at Intel. Intel's Chandler operations catalyzed partnerships between the company, local schools, colleges, and universities to create tailored engineering programs. This allowed graduates to directly enter Intel's high-paying jobs. In Ohio, Intel is taking a similar approach, working with technical schools and higher education to develop semiconductor-focused curriculum. Beyond supplying Intel's workforce needs directly, these programs will build Ohio's STEM expertise. In Chandler, the focus on education led other tech companies to establish operations there. After meeting with Intel engineers who went through these programs, we fully expect Ohio's tech education ecosystem to flourish similarly. For Ohio, Intel's presence could similarly attract more technology and research investment, potentially making the state a top destination for tech talent. From primary schools to universities, Intel's partnerships can enrich STEM education across Ohio. With Chandler as a blueprint, educators have a clear model to leverage Intel's arrival for long-term enhancement of technical education and workforce alignment. This rising-tide effect will extend beyond supplying Intel's own major hiring demands. Housing investors should support projects around universities and colleges ramping up STEM programs. Here's a snapshot of the data-driven transformations shaping the semiconductor landscape:  1️⃣ Impact of Legislative Acts: The CHIPS and Science Act provided $52 billion in subsidies, driving $166 billion in investments and job growth within a year. This includes significant investments from industry giants like Intel, TSMC, Micron, and GlobalFoundries, with new fabs and expansions planned across the U.S. 2️⃣ Rise of New Fabs: By 2025, 67 new fabs or fab expansions are set to begin construction, signaling a major leap forward in domestic manufacturing capacity.
