With the summer intern season quickly approaching, we asked Noella — a program manager on our intern programs team — to share her tips for incoming interns!

  • Tips for incoming summer interns
  • Build Relationships
- Set up 1-on-1 meetings with your team — and fellow interns — to introduce yourself and learn more about them. This is a great way to start building connections, and to figure out working styles, expectations, and workload.
- Ask people you’ve connected with if they have someone else they’d recommend that you meet with. This will help rapidly expand your network and make strong connections.
- Connect with people outside of your team and work area too! So many people love engaging with interns, so send an email explaining why you want to meet and come to the meeting prepared.
  • Prioritize Work/Life Balance
- Feel empowered to set boundaries, and prioritize protecting time for yourself. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, let someone know!
- Create a checklist each day and try to get as much done as possible — but also accept that sometimes you can’t complete everything.
- Participate in any intern events and activities throughout the summer. This is a great way to form connections, make memories, and have fun.
  • Make (and Track) Progress
- Document your work:
Create a list of everything you’re focused on — and everything you’ve accomplished — so your host has clear visibility into your work and progress.
Value feedback
- Be transparent! Ask for feedback from your host and make sure to implement it in your efforts moving forward. Additionally, feel empowered to also give your host constructive feedback.

Great tips, and the "build relationship" column is so applicable to the first 30-60-90 days on a job, regardless if intern or employee.
