Shailesh Prakash, VP of News at Google, sat down with TV presenter and documentary filmmaker, Barbara Serra at the International Journalism Festival #IJF in Perugia. Here are our takeaways: Journalists are in charge. AI-based technology can enhance a journalists’ work - not replace it. The journalist and editor must be in control of editorial decisions when using generative AI tools and make the choice about what content to use or not use. Innovative newsrooms are putting AI to work. Journalists and editorial teams are looking for ways to thoughtfully and intentionally bring AI into the newsroom; from transcribing interviews, and producing summaries of large documents, to helping brainstorm headlines. Starting today, journalists in Europe will have early access to Pinpoint, Google’s product for investigative journalists, including new AI features. Check it out here -> g.co/pinpoint If you tuned into the discussion, what were your takeaways?

USC Information Sciences Institute researchers are developing an AI source-recommendation engine to help journalists find diverse sources. The tool suggests relevant interviewees and experts by cross-referencing a database, aiming to support overstretched journalists, especially in local newsrooms. The AI model, trained on thousands of news articles, can detect source attributions with 83% accuracy. The researchers plan to collaborate with journalists to refine the tool, ensuring it meets the varied needs of the industry. A key aspect of this project is promoting diversity in source recommendations to bring new perspectives to journalism. #AIinJournalism #DiversityInJournalism #JournalismInnovation

💡🔍 Extraordinary News from the Intersection of AI and Journalism! 📰🧩 Guess what? Google 🎯 is experimenting with an intriguing tool that uses AI to create news stories! Named "Genesis," 🧬 this forward-thinking tool is designed to ingest information, like the specifics of current events 🌏⌛, and generate news narratives. It's been revealed to top-tier news entities such as The New York Times 🗞️, The Washington Post 🏛️, and News Corp 🏢. With technology on the rise 🚀⌛, the role of AI in journalism has become a hotbed of discussion and investigation 🕵️♀️🎙️. Google envisions this tool as a type of personal aide for journalists 🖋️📚 - automating certain tasks to liberate more time for other vital endeavors. The goal? To navigate the publishing industry away from the potential dangers of generative AI 📡🔒. Yet, not everyone is on board 🙅♂️🤷♀️. Some media executives view the technology as slightly disconcerting 😕💼, arguing that it seemingly overlooks the immense effort needed to produce precise and artfully woven news stories 🎨📝. What's your perspective? Can AI act as an effective tool for journalists without compromising the significance of human intuition and creativity in news production 🎭🎯? Could we be on the verge of a new epoch where AI assists rather than replaces human journalists 👫🎗️🤖? We're eager to hear your thoughts! 💭👇 #AIinJournalism 📰🤖 #FutureOfNews 📡⏳ #GoogleGenesis 🎯🧬 #AI 🧠 #NewsWriting 🖋️

A revolution is afoot in media and by extension, journalism. Economic factors have caused the decline of local media to the point where in the US two newspapers are forced to shut down every week. Another revolution – this one driven by advances in AI – is also shaking up media outlets and journalism. AI can represent enormous opportunities as well as existential risks for journalism. At question is both the use of AI by media outlets as well as the use of content (including copyrighted works) by AI companies. As media outlets like Germany’s biggest tabloid, BILD and BuzzFeed start to use AI, critics warn that use of AI in media and journalism could create and amplify misinformation, disinformation as well as promote bias. It is clear that if we are to set guardrails for the use of AI, the time is now. But the question remains what and how? Please join me and my TechSequences-host Leslie Daigle for a conversation with author, researcher and scholar Courtney Radsch, PhD, the Director of the Center Journalism and Liberty at the Open Markets Institute to discuss the potential consequences for media and journalism with the advent of AI. #AI #news #journalism #media #misinformation #disinformation #mediaindustry #artificialintelligence https://lnkd.in/eRJ7c7CW

💡How are newsrooms using AI?💡 🌟 As AI continues to evolve, marketers and PR pros need to know how it affects journalism. Understanding how AI software influences story discovery and content creation enables teams to refine their pitching and press release strategies. 📰🤖 🔍 Consider these recent examples of AI projects supported by AP's Local News AI initiative and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation: 🎙️ Michigan Radio, a University of Michigan NPR affiliate, uses an innovative tool that scrapes city council meetings from video sharing services, transcribes them, and generates tailored alerts. The result? Better visibility into public meetings and proactive notifications aligned with journalists’ beats and interests. 📺 Television station WFMZ-TV in Allentown, Pa., uses AI software that sorts and prioritizes news releases and story pitches from emails and other outside sources. And then, it enters the information into a content management system. 🤔 Thoughts? 👇 🔗 Learn more about the AI projects mentioned at https://lnkd.in/ep9H9QCM J.P. Escobar Jason Fink R. Declaring / Labelling AI generated content - What & How? In Sweden the media business has come together to develop a standard on how to declare their use of AI generated content (to comply with the EU AI act) - I think this can serve well as an inspiration to the rest of us? Shouldn't #Education also label AI content? The report (20 pages) is available in Swedish and English - and consists of 7 practical recommendations, including standard terminology: "The article is created with the support of an AI tool for text generation and has been reviewed by our editorial team before publication." "The illustration is created with the support of the AI tool DALL-E" Find the report here: https://lnkd.in/ddkdx9V5 #AILabelling #Labelling #EUAIAct #NAMS2024 #AIinPractice #AIcontent
