I want to see fewer product management job openings. Why? Many of those roles have absolutely nothing to do with product management. This pretend “product” work involves building internal tools, data platforms, integrations (to an extent), and other supporting systems. PMs in those roles don’t have responsibility over a clear revenue metric. They don’t do any GTM work. (No, "influencing" internal teams to adopt your SDK in endless "alignment" meetings is not GTM.) 🫠 And they don’t talk to users or customers. (Again, internal teams don’t count.) Companies are better off empowering EMs and program managers to handle this work. And yes, I totally support Airbnb’s call to merge product management with product marketing. Because guess what… Product Management is a business role. PMs are responsible for commercial performance of the product in the market. If in your company they don't... Oooof.

When it comes to hiring product managers, I've always believed that potential outshines pedigree. The role of a product manager is an art that can't be guaranteed by pedigree alone.💡 #Hiring #ProductManagement #PotentialOverPedigree

I will be hiring a senior product manager soon. If you know someone who is a good fit for these criteria please comment so I can connect with them. Preview: 1) Do you have experience and enjoy working in early-stage companies? 2) Have you implemented and run a product discovery process? 3) Would you be interested in working with me? Are you sure? :) 4) Would like to help businesses and work on a truly mission-driven team?

There's been a lot of talk about Airbnb "getting rid" of the Product Management role. I haven't said anything because I wanted to hear the rest of the story. From what I can tell, they are morphing this into a more business related role, rather than purely tech. I don't think this is a bad thing. Product Management has always firmly sat between business, tech, and the user/customer. In SAAS companies, the Product Management role has always been about figuring out how to grow the business by solving customer problems with the right software. In other companies that are not software-native, you saw this same act being done by GMs of the business, but just with the tools available to drive the business at the time - sales, marketing, and human operations. What does a GM look like in a product-led business? Someone overseeing the teams that build the things you sell. As more and more companies become predominately software companies, I believe the Product Management role and GM roles are going to merge. You won't be a great GM unless you deeply understand software, along with understanding your domain. Product Management was never purely about "tech" and if companies were treating it so, of course, they didn't see the value of the role. I also find businesses that just "get rid" of the Product Management role are really unhappy when they find out how much Product Managers actually do. I do think we should all strive though to empower our engineers and designers to make critical tactical decisions, so Product Managers do not have to be so in the weeds. This helps scale our organizations effectively. Anyway, that is my hot take, and I'm curious to hear what you think! #productmanagement #business #tech #airbnb #prodmgmt

Product management is fundamentally about growing the business. Airbnb’s move to combine product management with product marketing is growing recognition that product leaders must also understand how to market and grow the business. Over the last decade product management has become too focused on the mechanics of agile deliverables (writing user stories and grooming backlog) and technical (determining functional architecture), and not enough about understanding the company’s business or the customer’s business. Looking forward to seeing the pendulum swing back and having product management return to its roots. A great product leader is a general manager. #productleadership #productmanagement #productmarketing #productmanagementisbusinessmanagement

Very Insightful take analysis. I believe this is a smart thing to do as Product management has been growing and changing in the last few years. Coming from Physical Good industry, a Product manager is literally like a maestro guiding the tone of the band around him, so merging that more into GM or Business Development aspect makes perfect sense. At the end of the day, a Product Manager's target is to Grow the Business and this takes place through various types of innovation not just limited to product innovation. #business #innovation #productmanagement #businessdevelopment #product #GM #management

I am starting to see this for Experience positions as well. An organization benefits when Design Thinking is emphasized and experience can cast visions as well as the path to get there using all the tools and insights they possess in a mature role. In fact, a huge mistake I often see is not considering user experience professionals for head of product opportunities. This of course depends on the perceptions within an org of the roles. In the end, it is all Experience. The sooner you can create a value based symbiotic relationship with your customers, the sooner your outcomes will align with business goals. #userexperience
