Coal generation decreased in 2022, but overall U.S. emissions increased U.S. coal-related CO2 emissions decreased by 7%, or 68 million metric tons (MMmt), in 2022 relative to 2021. This decrease was largely due to an 8% decline in coal-fired power generation because of retiring coal-fired generating capacity. Changes in electricity generation sources decreased the carbon intensity of electricity by 4% in the United States in 2022 as growing natural gas-fired and renewable energy resources and a coal supply shortage contributed to the lower coal-related emissions. https://bit.ly/3N4y2RX

In a First, Wind and Solar Generated More Power Than Coal in U.S.

Europe's #power producers generated more electricity from wind than from coal for the first time in the last quarter of 2023, marking a key milestone for regional #energy transition efforts. Europe's #utilities generated a record 193 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity from #wind sites in the October to December window in 2023 compared to 184 TWh from #coal-fired power plants, data from #thinktank Ember shows. #Wind generation during the final quarter of 2023 was roughly 20% more than in the same quarter in 2022, and came despite widespread setbacks for the wind installation sector in 2023 due to high labour, materials and financing costs. https://lnkd.in/ei_6fWZ8

Interesting to see how rooftop solar and market forces are accelerating the exit of coal, so building a renewable energy system with enough security and capacity is on the critical path…

Pleased to speak on Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) about AEMO’s Draft 2024 Integrated System Plan – a roadmap for Australia’s energy transition. The plan shows that the lowest‐cost pathway for secure and reliable electricity is from renewable energy, connected by transmission, supported by batteries and pumped hydro, and backed up by gas powered generation. And while progress is being made, the transition is urgent and faces significant risks. To deliver the lowest cost pathway, the plan calls for investment that would: 1️⃣ Triple grid‐scale variable renewable generation by 2030 (57 GW) and increase it seven‐fold by 2050 (126 GW). 2️⃣ Add almost four times the firming capacity from dispatchable storage, hydro and gas‐powered generation by 2050 (74 GW). 3️⃣ Support a four‐fold increase in rooftop solar capacity by 2050 (72 GW), capable of providing additional benefits to consumers if coordinated and responsive to market and operational signal, and 4️⃣ Add close to 10,000 km of new and upgraded transmission by 2050, as highlighted in previous plans, with around a quarter underway and half to be delivered in the next decade.   The plan comes after 18 months of engagement with industry experts, network service providers, generators and retailers, governments, researchers, academics, and consumer advocates. It's another #renewableenergy first! A new IEA report shows that the combined electricity generation from wind and #solar exceeded generation from coal in January, February, and March of 2023 and that this trend continued in April and May. Coal generated almost half of the country’s electricity as recently as 2008, according to this article. That's not going to happen again. #DriveEnergyFoward https://lnkd.in/e6jWgGnC
