In an era where silence has become an all-too-common response to job applications, Mick McConnell's words resonate deeply with me. Like many, I've navigated the often opaque waters of job hunting, where the simple acknowledgment of one's application has become a rarity rather than the norm. Mick's experience with Airbnb shines a beacon of respect and dignity in this process, a reminder that the fundamental courtesy of communication can leave a lasting impact. I echo Mick's sentiment wholeheartedly. In my own journey, I yearn for the days when a rejection email was a sign of mutual respect—a sign that a company acknowledges the time, effort, and aspiration behind every application. This silence not only leaves candidates in limbo but also diminishes the excitement and respect they have for potential employers. The way Airbnb responded —not with one, but two personal emails— sets a gold standard in professional communication. It's a testament to the fact that in the digital age, where emails and messages zip through the ether at lightning speed, taking a moment to acknowledge an application is not just about keeping candidates informed; it's about valuing them as professionals and individuals. So, to companies everywhere: a simple note, a brief acknowledgment, can mean the world to someone who sees a future within your walls. Let's not forget the power of communication. It's more than just courtesy; it's a bridge that connects us, even in rejection. To everyone still on their job search journey: Your value does not diminish with silence. Keep striving, keep reaching. Your next opportunity awaits, where your talents will be seen, heard, and valued. #JobSearch #ProfessionalCourtesy #HumanResources

Sincerely, Mick McConnell. Dear AirBnB, I wanted to personally thank you because you have set the standard for how to treat professionals that are applying for positions. I cannot tell you how many jobs I have applied to where "nothing" is the new norm. Nothing. No receipt of application is confirmed. No rejection. No interview. Nothing. I have been applying to positions for CCO roles, ECD roles, GCD roles, CD roles - I think you understand where this is going... AirBnB responded immediately with a thanks. Within a day I had, not one, but two personal emails acknowledging they had seen my application and resume (albeit both notes said I was either "overqualified" or the position was "too junior") and that they would keep my name and qualifications in mind. This is huge; and that is sad. When did it become okay to not respond to people that want to work for you; that want to work for YOUR company. I know so many of you spend so much time on Zoom calls. Use that time to send a note to an applicant. It will mean a lot to them - even if it is a rejection. So thank you Airbnb for rejecting applicants but allowing them to keep their dignity and allowing them to move on and look for the next opportunities. Because of that simple gesture, we all still want to work for you. Again, Sincerely, Mick McConnell
