It's #TipTuesday! Edrius Stagg, Esq. provides this week's tip reminding employers to comply with all wage and hour requirements during the leap year: A leap year for employers brings along an extra day where the potential for salaried employees to no longer be overtime exempt is high. To get ahead of possible litigation exposure during a leap year, employers should first anticipate the extra pay period and consider adding an additional pay period. Second, employers should be aware of the salary threshold for overtime exemptions, which is currently $684/week, under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Finally, to avoid exposure, employers should utilize a timekeeping system that is sophisticated enough to account for the time worked by hourly employees on the extra day that a leap year brings. Ultimately, employers should make sure they are in compliance with all wage and hour requirements, particularly during the leap year. #employmentlaw #leapyear #wageandhour
