I believe that education and awareness are crucial aspects. Wild animals serve as essential educational tools, inspiring curiosity and providing opportunities for people, especially children, to learn about the natural world. This fosters a sense of environmental stewardship and instills vital conservation ethics. Moreover, genetic diversity is of great importance. Wild animals often possess genetic traits that can be invaluable for breeding programs, aimed at enhancing the health and resilience of domesticated species. Preserving wild populations is instrumental in safeguarding this genetic diversity. Additionally, climate change mitigation is a pressing concern. Healthy ecosystems with intact wildlife populations play a pivotal role in this effort. For instance, forests act as substantial carbon sinks, effectively regulating the climate. Furthermore, there exists an ethical and moral responsibility. Many people hold the belief that we are obligated to protect wild animals and their habitats. As a species endowed with the capacity for understanding and stewardship, it is argued that it is our duty to prevent unnecessary suffering and avert the threat of extinction.
"Every action we take, whether we achieve all we set out to do or not, tends to make things better than if we did nothing.” – Tracy Davids, Southeast Senior Representative Defenders of Wildlife is dedicated to wildlife conservation so that there may be a future where North America’s wildlife is secure, thriving and sustained by a network of healthy lands and waters. A win for red wolves! ❤️🐺 Wild red wolves rebounded from extinction in 1987 to about 100 animals in the early 2000s. That population level persisted for about a decade. When a 2020 lawsuit was filed, the wild red wolf population of North Carolina dropped to as low as seven known wild wolves. This was after the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) abandoned its previous, successful #conservation efforts. This new agreement recommits USFWS to the conservation and recovery of the world’s only wild red wolf population. There is still a long way to go towards saving these #endangered wolves, but this is a great first step for the survival of Canis rufus. Read more about the settlement for recovering red wolf populations here: https://lnkd.in/g4TmD5hb #WildlifeConservation #RedWolfRecovery #EndangeredSpeciesAct
A better future for red wolves has arrived. After years of inattention and hostility towards these canids, this deal reached with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and Defenders of Wildlife along with partner conservation organizations turns the corner and provides a road map for the recovery of red wolves. What footprints will you leave behind? 🐾 This week is National Estate Planning Awareness Week (NEPAW). Over 60% of American adults do not have an up to date will or trust, the goal of #NEPAW is to help people understand the importance of having a plan in place to protect not only loved ones but also important causes. Did you know you can name IRF as a beneficiary? Making a planned gift to IRF is one of the easiest and most flexible ways to create a conservation legacy that reflects your values – and supports wildlife conservation for future generations. It will be good to see the population counts of these ponds - note the number of ponds per area is less than 10. Occupancy rates seem to paint a picture but I cannot help but feel what the status of newts actually is within these ponds? Where are the peak counts or density figures of newts within ponds during the breeding seasons? Comparing the national, regional, and the nature space occupancy is a pretty meaningless metric at this stage of the game - prior to the strategic organisational licenses there has been at least 20years of monitoring of site based mitigation projects which have had 100% occupancy rates Hopefully the two approaches will combine in order to provide enough pond turn over for the Newt populations in England. Natural England 4,000plus ponds will no doubt aid the recovery of Newt populations in their areas too. Demand I hear is outstripping supply of ponds so eventually hybrid schemes with sites and their BNG allocations should arise in the future..
