Why is access to information an integral part of our fundamental human rights? "Informed citizens can make informed decisions, for instance, when going to the polls. Only when citizens know how they are governed, can they hold their governments accountable for their decisions and actions. Information is power. Therefore, universal access to information is a cornerstone of healthy and inclusive knowledge societies. Universal access to information means that everyone has the right to seek, receive and impart information. This right is an integral part of the right to freedom of expression. The media plays a crucial role in informing the public about issues of interest, but it relies on the ability to seek and receive information, too. Hence, the right to universal access to information is also bound up with the right to freedom of the press." Read more here: https://ow.ly/7rxu50PQm57

We often hear that respecting and implementing human rights is expensive. Or is it just an excuse? With figures to back it up, the Human Rights Measurement Initiative shows that with the same resources, states can do more and better, i.e. it shows the percentage of the country’s obligation it has met, compared to what the best performing countries have achieved at each income level. On their website, you can explore by countries, rights, and people: https://rightstracker.org/

Human Rights and Democracy Analyst at the United Nations Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa- CARO
Today we honour the memory of all journalists and human rights defenders killed for their struggle for truth, justice and equality. There is no progress without press freedom. Unfortunately, in a context where civic spaces are continuously shrinking, the press is gradually silenced or manipulated. Today is also an opportunity to remind the press of their responsibilty in echoing voices that matter, preaching for peace and sustainable governance and development. The press should continuously raise awareness on the biggest global challenges such as the environmental crisis triggering bigger crises or even conflicts. The battle should also be against fake news, disinformation and hate speeches.

However, human rights are still under threat worldwide. 🌍 On the occasion of Human Rights Day, Hannah Neumann, vice-chair of Parliament's human rights subcommittee, discusses how the situation has evolved in the European Union and globally since the Declaration was adopted. Today is #HumanRightsDay. The ASA Panel on Public Policy asks you to consider the progress that we as a global community have made in the pursuit of universal human rights generally, but more specifically the human right to access the benefits of science, as well as the right to actively participate in the pursuit of science itself. https://lnkd.in/gQqWZRWy

With the introduction of a comprehensive four-step strategy, WAIT wants to prevent further loss of fundamental rights, strengthen our position under international law and regain a political seat at the table: STEP ONE: EMPOWERING THE NON-ESTABLISHMENT By becoming a WAIT member global citizens and Small Medium Enterprises (SME’s), can unite and proclaim their autonomy as it relates to current political realities STEP TWO: CRITICAL MASS Our goal is to reach a critical mass of millions of people and to develop into an independent collective fit for the complex challenges of a hyper-digitized 21st century STEP THREE: LEGAL REPRESENTATION Using strength in numbers we shall introduce legal and philosophical arguments in order to upgrade outdated democratic constitutions and treaties STEP FOUR: POLITICAL RELEVANCY Building dialogue across the board, from local to international politics, on democratic and liberal first principles https://lnkd.in/esSBjmRJ

Let's communicate human rights better! 🥳 A brilliant guide by Civil Liberties Union for Europe gives tips and tricks! Their bottom line: Instead of merely saying that a right has been violated, use examples that explain the impact on people 🔥 A long read, but definitely worth it! 👉🏽https://lnkd.in/eD3ZMRJs
