500+ companies have said “no” to working with offsite. com historically, but… We’ve learned each time and have gotten better, and better, and better. They said our services were too expensive. We now charge our highest per-person rates we ever have in our company’s history while still being competitive in the market. And we also offer a free software product (like Airbnb for team retreat venues) at offsite. com Some companies told us other providers seemed better than us, for whatever reason. More often than not, 6-12 months later those same companies came back to us, saying our competitors over-promised and under-delivered. Or they charged a lower fee upfront, but actually took a percent of the total budget later on and suddenly our competitors are VERY expensive. Or they were “nice people” but were not very good at #offsite planning. Meanwhile, we learned from every offsite we planned (200+ now). And more importantly. We learned from every “no” in order to make a better software product, improve our end-to-end offsite planning services, and become “best in class” for any company planning team retreats. 🌟 The Unforgettable Team Getaway! 🌟   This past weekend, our company took us on a spectacular two-day retreat that united our teams from four distinct locations.   It wasn't just a trip; it was a journey of joy, bonding, and invaluable insights. The enthusiasm with which our top management embraced these views was truly inspiring.   🌊 Overcoming Fears: One of our team members had fear of water and when she shared that, the top management helped her overcome it with constant support. She ended up not only enjoying water, but also the joy of overcoming the fear is now etched in her memory.   💡 A Memorable Mélange: The retreat was a perfect blend of fun, food, activities, and brainstorming session. It was an experience that left us all joyous, enlightened, and more connected.   As we reflect on this remarkable journey, we're reminded of the power of unity and shared goals. I just wrapped up my first longer work trip since becoming a dad. I went to Boston, Chicago, and Toronto to do the following: 🔹 Meet with a client and launch an org transformation program. 🔹Give a talk at HBS on “How to find a co-founder and build a lasting partnership.” 🔹Meet with another client and give a talk on team resilience 🔹Meet with 5 different VC / PE partners 🔹Host 2 in person client sessions 🔹Be on-site with a client on a day that happened to be my birthday. Here are my quick takeaways on the value of spending time in person and the benefits of it vs building relationships on Zoom: 1. For building trust with new partners, in-person is far more effective. It’s more fun and enables greater ease in collaborating afterward. 2. Shadowing an executive client is incredibly powerful experience and it gives a significant degree of new data on how that client is using our sessions in different live leadership scenarios. There are subtle insights that are part of the process of pushing to the depth of deeper growth and behavior change. 3. Exploring different startup/business ecosystems is valuable. For example, spending time in Boston gave me a much stronger perspective about how the Boston startup ecosystem is tied to academia and the benefits/drawbacks that creates in terms of co-founding (often with one academic co-founder), hiring, and more. These cultural differences are easy to intellectually understand but hard to fully grasp without being there. 5. I was surprised and touched by a surprise birthday celebration. This made me reflect on how the way you treat partners is reflective of the care and thought you put into your team. Parenting takeaway 👶 It was incredibly hard being away from my kids for 5 days. The change in the cost-benefit ratio of travel after becoming a parent is game changing (for all you soon-to-be parents). I’m happy to have done this jam packed trip as one-off way to explore these concepts and improve my craft; and, I don’t expect to be do this again soon. Despite the benefits of being in person, the overall effectiveness of zoom for most team and leadership tasks today, as well as the benefit of being with my family, means that this sort of trip will be a special and infrequent equation.
