Why is it important to represent river channels in flood models? This simulation of a 1-in-200 year flood event on the Memphis floodplain highlights the importance of river channels in modeling flood risk. The water being inputted here is at the top of the domain, but you can see the flood wave seemingly propagates from both the bottom and the top of the channel. This is because the river channel is conveying the water quickly to the bottom of the domain, however, it then hits a bunch of meanders and so the water begins to back up. Fathom’s new US Flood Map features simulations of flooding for all river channels, irrespective of size, including even the smallest of flow pathways.
