Can you land a remote senior sales role at one of the fastest-growing unicorns in history with no tech sales background? Here’s the inspiring story of Samuel Goss. Due to being located in a part of the UK without a tech presence, Sam decided it was time to take control of his career path. After moving to Asia, Sam landed a remote Account Executive role at Deel. -- ⚙️How did you get started in tech sales? I'd worked across a variety of different industries over the past 6 years of my career. Getting into tech had always been my goal but due to lack of experience and being located in an area of the UK where no tech companies were based, I never had the chance to take the leap. That was until I moved to Asia and into a shared house with a recruiter for Deel. I continued working with my old employer for a while before a role become available that suited my needs and was too exciting to turn down. Having that referral was ultimately the bit of luck I needed to land a remote tech sales role and I've not looked back ever since. 🚩What was the #1 misconception you had about tech sales when first starting out? Initially, I believed tech sales would centre solely on the product and that the platform would 'sell itself', particularly in comparison to other things I had sold in the past. However, it's far more multifaceted. One of the worst things you can do is present your solution too early before the clients pain points have been clearly identified. Tech sales is about understanding clients' unique needs and providing tailored solutions. By weaving together a good quality, elaborate discovery phase and truly identifying what the client wants you can make the product so much easier to sell later on. 🎯For current tech sales reps, what's your #1 sales tip? Leverage off the experience of your colleagues throughout your time within your role, but particularly during the early days. When I first joined my current job, I set up as many calls as I could with different key stakeholders within our business. Anyone from top performing sales reps, to senior managers within the sales department and even team members from other departments that I knew I'd be having key interactions with in the future. By exposing yourself to many different people within the organisation, you'll be more quickly exposed to some of the major issues both sales and your other non-sales colleagues are having. Through speaking to many colleagues and understanding their viewpoint on a problem/scenario/issue will likely mean your approach to problem-solving later on would be far different than if you were to look at this from a solitary point of view. - ⭐️ Keen to share your story, or know a top performing SDR or AE that we should feature next?
