I’ve had this post on my mind for a little while, but finally sat down to write it for a few reasons -
1. So other people understand that it is HARD to be job searching while pregnant. It is hard choice to do it while you’re employed, and it is a scary thing to do if you’ve been laid off.
2. So anyone out there that is pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, or planning their lives or their careers can see that is it TOTALLY POSSIBLE to change jobs while you’re pregnant. It is a thing that people do, and you shouldn’t put anything on hold.
In January 2021 I decided I wanted to change jobs. The company I was working at was fine, but it wasn’t what I needed to grow my life and family the way that I wanted to. Even though I was 4 months pregnant I had a safety net because I was employed.
I interviewed at a few places and was grateful for video interviews to be shoulders-up. The place I ended up was fantastic! I had a great team and great advocates - I was able to take fully paid maternity leave 3 months after I started.
I worked so hard those first few months. I went on leave, came back, and then kept working hard. We got a lot of really great stuff done, and I grew as a professional and a person.
It was a bummer, 19 months later (October 2022) when I was laid off. Somehow, I was 4 months pregnant this time, too.
It is a hard place to be in, unemployed and pregnant. It has felt even harder to see news of layoffs and hiring freezes too. I wanted (needed) a job, but had to balance that with my ambition to find a good job, and not just any job. It is scary to ask questions about parental leave policies without feeling too obvious (and running the risk of bias coming into the interview process).
I wish all companies could do better with their leave policies and make that information easier to understand during interview processes. But I also learned that the companies that do have more transparency are the places I want to work! It is a great symptom of their DEI&B focus.
But guess what - I found a job. In fact, I got to a point with multiple offers. I’ll have paid parental leave and a great team.
Anyone else out there - have you hired or interviewed while pregnant? What was your experience like?
Something to noodle on - what can you do to make your interview process easier for someone that’s pregnant? What policies do you have in place that are a barrier?
