Elizaveta Forbes speaking on the panel for “What’s needed to deliver net zero supply chain?” Key points raised recognised that the risks are changing around our industry. The pathway to success requires both technological solutions to decarbonise, but also genuine investment in environmental best practice, rigorous data required for permitting etc. There is significant complexity especially around mines getting deeper, grades falling and the flow on impacts for waste generation. Genuine holistic perspectives and collaboration are needed to understand the whole landscape of a project and achieve viable projects that have really good environmental, emission and community outcomes, standards and assurance. Earlier this month our team attended the AusIMM Life of Mine Conference 2023 in Brisbane to meet and hear from delegates at the forefront of sustainable mining. Discussions focussed on mine closure planning and optimising mine life including consideration of post-mining land use, otherwise known as PMLU’s. The top three key themes that were discussed throughout the three-day conference included: ➡️ Investors interest in ESG credentials, rehabilitation and closure regulatory reform, are seeing the industry invest in the optimisation of mine life, and considering PMLU’s through a more refined lens. ➡️ Australia is well positioned to capitalise on the demand for critical resources, thanks to its resources and competitive (ESG) policy setting. ➡️ There is an interest in mine closure, and discussions are optimistic, but there is little evidence from Australia and globally that proves mine closure can be done well. From PMLU’s to NUMA’s, landform evolution models to bio-cements stabilising tailings, the Life of Mine Conference showed attendees that there is plenty of interest in the space, and the team were thrilled to participate in such a fantastic industry event. 📸 Our Associate Michael Gale snapped trying out the virtual reality technology on show at the event.

Ross Browning, Impact250 MD & CEO, has been appointed by the Board of enviroMETS (Qld) as an independent non-executive director. enviroMETS finds innovative ESG solutions and sustainable ways to make mining impacted land valuable to its future custodians – by adopting a collaborative approach to technical innovation, fresh thinking about recommercialising mine land, repurposed post mining land use and new land rehabilitation methods. Ross is looking forward to getting actively involved in the enviroMETS Board. He believes Queensland and the resource sector have yet to realise the significant high value post mining land use (PMLU) potential outcomes. The approach that enviroMETS pursues offers significant opportunities for the betterment of society. He holds the conviction that “enviroMETS can uniquely support us to move past the history of factors that have led to perverse legacy outcomes with new and different ways of thinking about PMLU solutions. My interest is to find practical solutions worked through pilot projects and genuinely integrating stakeholder’s interests, including traditional owners.” Said enviroMETS Chair, Russell Merz, “Ross fills gaps in our skills and experience that have become increasingly important as the organisation grows towards addressing its key purpose." enviroMETS Qld Ross Browning #impact250 #sustainability #pmlu
