Ed-Tech Development Evolves to Address Risks of AI As schools and universities make more use of artificial intelligence-driven tools, some ed-tech developers are seeking input from educators and implementing policies related to ethical use and data privacy. “One of the big things that we hear from teachers [about AI] is, there’s often this lack of understanding and a lack of vision and immediate reaction of, ‘Kill it!’ I think from students, it’s a very, very different experience,” said Brian Imholte. “I think what you’re seeing from a younger set of folks and students who are younger college students is a complete embracing [of the technology], and they don’t care much about the privacy of the data pieces because with younger kids in particular, they’ve grown up in a world where all their data is in essence shared.” Read the full story in the comments below. #highered #higheredtech #edtech #AI #dataprivacy

I help postsecondary educators build vibrant organizations and effective programs. Coaching postsecondary educators & creative professionals through learning & career transitions.
Ethan Mollick links to some remarkable videos demonstrating the multimodal, interactive possibilities of the latest ChatGPT model being released by OpenAI: https://lnkd.in/g_tvVwtJ The video that struck me shows Salman Khan of the Khan Academy and his son interacting with the AI as a trigonometry tutor. The AI was able to listen to audio, engage with the student's verbal and haptic interactions with the diagram, and offer constructive, encouraging feedback. I think it through designing AI as virtuous "social agents" that are part of multimodal learning environments that educators will be able to harness the power of this technology. Another video shows AIs interacting. The more powerful one was able to process visual data about the person and the physical environment of the room. The AI got a little hung up on the mid-century modern industrial decor of the office where they were filming, but still - it categorized the shapes and decor of the room. It is funny - I have yet to find such robust thoughtful discussion of AI in workplace learning and development. If you know of anyone robust, please comment below. I hope we start to see researchers like Mollick and others starting to talk about how AI is seeping into the world of work of all kinds.

Ethan Mollick's take on the release of the new AI model, GPT-4o. "Likely the biggest impact of GPT-4o is not technical, but a business decision: soon everyone, whether they are paying or not, will get access to GPT-4o1. I think this is a big deal. When I talk with groups and ask people to raise their hands if they use ChatGPT, almost every hand goes up. When I ask if they used GPT-4, only 5% of hands remain up, at most. GPT-4 is so, so much better than free ChatGPT-3.5, it is like having a PhD student work with you instead of a high school sophomore. But that $20 a month barrier kept many people from understanding how impressive AI can be, and for gaining any benefit from AI. That is no longer true." It is going to have a huge impact on education, work, and everything else! https://lnkd.in/gD4pBBtJ #genai #openai #generativeai #llms

Creator of Databilities® - the pioneering framework to measure, map and develop data literacy across the globe.
I get it. Generative AI is creating a world of opportunity - but at what cost? What fuel does it use for these “creations” and where does it come from? From us. That’s why universal data literacy is more important than ever - every single person needs to know what digital-pixie-dust they’re spreading, how it can be collected and used, and what measures they can take to protect it falling into the wrong hands.
This is perhaps one of the most important statements you will read this year. Take note. "Data is the lifeblood of AI, and understanding how to collect, analyze, and interpret data is essential for harnessing the power of AI technologies. This includes knowledge of data privacy and security, as well as the ethical considerations surrounding data collection and usage. As AI systems become more sophisticated and integrated into our daily lives, individuals must be able to make informed decisions about the data they generate and share."

After a couple of relatively “slow” days in AI news, OpenAI drops this (tadaaaaa)! GPT-4o. What’s interesting as that, while somewhat lamely named per usual, it’s not just “this model is smarter than GPT-4” just like we saw when it kicked the free GPT-3.5’s butt - we can see that there are forces in play that will really start to spread access to even late adopters. You know that weird guy who still doesn’t have a cell phone? It’ll be like that if you’re not using AI. The key here is that enterprise adoption needs to get cracking. Employees are already using it for work, whether they tell their bosses or not. And yes, I do believe that security risks are real if they aren’t given a secure way to use it. Anyway, Prof. Ethan Mollick articulates this very well, so give it read if you feel inclined. #ai #aiatwork #openai #gpt4o https://lnkd.in/d5yZGVzw

AI won't replace great teachers (yet). With massive investments in virtual teaching assistants, there are hopes for AI to deliver personalized learning at scale. Yet, bringing AI into the classroom is more complex than it seems. IBM poured over $100 million into creating an AI tutoring system with its Watson supercomputer. They envisioned AI tutors that could engage any student through personalized lessons, no human required. But after 5 years, the project fizzled out. Effective one-on-one tutoring requires a human touch that AI still can't replicate. As an IBM researcher put it, "At the heart of education, at the heart of any learning, is engagement. And that's kind of the Holy Grail." Great teachers don't just convey information - they motivate, inspire, and build relationships. They adjust to subtle cues and bring out the best in each student. AI tutors are helpful aids but not replacements. Reducing human connection and engagement to an algorithm may be AI's greatest challenge. Humans 1, AI 0...at least for today. I'm excited to see what creative solutions emerge next in EdTech. #EdTech #EducationInnovation #FutureOfLearning #IBMWatson #HumanvsAI https://lnkd.in/ga9xtXAb

If you could advise #edtech companies on what to consider as they develop #AI technology for schools, what would you say? As education leaders and policymakers weigh the pros and cons of using AI, the Software and Information Industry Association on Tuesday released principles to guide companies when developing tools for the classroom. But SIIA is just the latest organization across the private, industry and government sectors to release AI guidance for schools.
