More and more companies are actively opening positions for Staff and Principal Engineers. Complexity of the software is moving towards the necessity for high level IC roles. There is a need for technical contribution from the strategic point of view together with the strong technical skills. You're not just contributing technically but also influencing the broader strategy of your organization. Managers across different levels become you partners rather than mere supervisors. You have a significant degree of autonomy and responsibility. There is no certain answer on how it is to be a Staff or Principal engineer, but you can learn a lot from great engineers. I wish I would have know this earlier in my carrier: #Modern #Engineering #Carrier #Path - Adopted by big corporations but confusion for 👨💼 small companies and #recruiting. Many #organizations I have worked with struggle with defining a clear technical carrier path. Lets take a look at the commonly defined roles from least to most experienced. 🐣 #Junior Engineer/Engineer I (little influence): The journey begins as a Junior Engineer or Engineer I. At this stage, engineers acquire foundational technical knowledge and skills through education and early work experiences. They contribute to projects under the guidance of more senior team members, gaining hands-on experience and exposure to different aspects of engineering. 🐺 #Engineer II/III (Implementation Influence): As engineers progress, they move into the Engineer II or Engineer III level. Here, they become more proficient in their technical domain and take on more complex projects with greater independence. They demonstrate their ability to solve challenging problems, collaborate effectively, and deliver high-quality solutions. 🐯 #Senior #Engineer (System Influence): At the Senior Engineer level, engineers have established themselves as experts in their field. They possess a deep understanding of complex systems, possess significant technical experience, and demonstrate exceptional problem-solving abilities. Senior Engineers take ownership of critical projects, mentor junior team members, and actively contribute to the technical growth of the organization. 🦁 #Staff #Engineer (Project/Product Influence): The Staff Engineer level marks a significant transition in the career path. Staff Engineers not only excel in their technical domain but also demonstrate leadership potential and a broader impact on the organization. They tackle highly complex and strategic projects, provide technical guidance to teams, and contribute to architectural decisions. Staff Engineers often act as technical mentors and advisors, helping shape the direction of junior and mid-level engineers. They are recognized as thought leaders and influential voices within their field, driving innovation, and advocating for technical excellence. 🐉 #Principal or #Distinguished #Engineer (Company/Strategy Influence): In some organizations, the Staff+ career extend to include Principal Engineer, Distinguished Engineer, or Fellow levels. These are highly distinguished positions reserved for the most accomplished engineers. Engineers at these levels are renowned experts in their field, have made significant contributions to the industry, and often serve as ambassadors for the organization. They shape technical vision, drive innovation, and represent the organization at conferences and industry events. The hardest part of building a "good" tech company, is building a good engineering team. And you cannot build a good engineering team if you don't love the engineering yourself. That is why unlike every other business, most of the successful tech companies are founded by engineers instead of businessmen. Ultimately those engineering-founders turn into businessmen, but the core of the business surrounds heavily around engineers. They are the raw product of a good tech company. The company can have a vision, a plan, and goal to aim for, but if the raw material is not good, the end product is never going to be decent enough. #teambuilding #hiring #engineering #tech
