Are company values important? When you grow quickly, and via multiple acquisitions, you’ve likely got a wonderful melting pot of values and cultures and different ways of working. Invisible to the naked eye, this all serves to reinforce silos that detract from efficiency & the likelihood of the business achieving its goals. How do you start bringing people together? You want a common language, a common set of behaviours and an agreed way of working that applies, no matter where you are based, or how you came to be there. Following several focus groups with employees (who are never shy to tell you what they think the Values should be!) Gamma launched a new set of values earlier this year and we have been working hard to make them real across the group. 💜 We are there, and we care 🌱 We love to grow 👣 We step up and own it ✔️ We do the right thing Listening to feedback from our employee survey, we need to do more to recognise our people and so we’ve implemented a process by which we can recognise those who have gone above and beyond in demonstrating the Values. Nominated by their peers, it was heartening to read all 223 nominations - we have a lot of great people at Gamma and this process was a reminder of that! First, our Values Champions reviewed the nominations & created a shortlist, Andrew and Chris then picked the final 4 and we announced them at our Q2 webcast. We even had a live web-cam over to the team in Amstelveen to see our winner receive his award there, it was great fun to host! The nominations for Q3 are now open and I’m excited to see what comes through. Internal Comms & Engagement isn’t always fun & games, but this is a pleasure! 🎉 #gamma #valuesinaction

Judging by my LinkedIn feed we are definitely in awards season. We recently entered for an award, having vowed never to do it again, and failed to make the shortlist. I was disappointed but there were some heavy weight names in there so I guess our story failed to cut through to the judges. It made me reflect on previous award encounters. In 2003 when I was CFO of Argos we won the Retail Week Retailer of the Year. We were on fire at the time but it was still a shock. Not as much of a shock as seeing a fellow board member, who was in their first month, punching the air with more enthusiasm than the rest of us. That same year at the Furniture Industry Awards we were booed at every mention. Tough crowd! At M and M Direct we were on fire too: new warehouse, new back office systems, new website, doubling profits, new channels and new geographies. So I decided to enter the Drapers eTail Awards. Unfortunately I had a ski holiday planned and was at dinner when I got a frantic call from my Chairman complaining nobody was there to pick up all the awards we were winning. My colleague, who was on a delayed flight, managed to get there just in time to pick up the overall winner award. Given that we pipped ASOS to that award it was no mean feat and I heard that Nick Robertson called his team into his office the next morning to give them a dressing down. He had gotten over it by the next event when, after ASOS won a clutch of awards, he looked up to me on the Grosvenor House Hotel balcony and made a “L” shape on his forehead. Revenge is a dish best served cold – almost as cold as the soup at a Grosvenor House Hotel awards dinner. I recently got approached by an awards company as I was fortunate enough to be picked as one of the top 10 most inspiring leaders in the world. All I needed to do was provide a profile and $10,000 to feature in their report. I am not sure I would make the top 10 most inspiring leaders in my village so I gave it a miss. So what’s the point of awards? I am often lucky enough to be asked to judge so I do think they have a place in the corporate world. They can be great for team morale and also for a bit of free PR (if you don’t take into account the £5,000 for a table). But you have to see them as a bit of fun as the process is fraught with potential disappointment. A coach once told me not to crave the recognition of others but instead be comfortable with your own view of how well you are doing. In that respect I would much rather be judged by the businesses we work with and a low churn rate. That is until the next entry……

What a year - looking at pure numbers (yes, boring), we have the best year, best quarter of a Geo in EMEA (Q4) and the highest number of overperformers in the DACH Team EVER this year. All new records, which is amazing for a company existing 20+ years in a software space often called "traditional"; but we see market demand for innovative HR solutions, companies need to re- / upskill, meet rising employee expectations and - yes - our team simply rocks. And still - this is not always an easy market, we did not get everything right and I personally feel I could have done better in driving one of our sub-teams to better results, helping some people in a difficult year to enjoy their role here more, in addressing issues (be it personal or performance - often linked) quicker. Therefore, I want to again THANK MY TEAM for their support, keeping up with changes, being persistent and staying with the A-Team of Sales & Account Management in DACHEE. You did fantastic in 2023 ! We will celebrate together in Orlando at SKO 24 and below a Teams-Shot, celebrating one of the larger wins beginning of the year. Wonderful spirit ! How do you celebrate and recognize talent and a job well done? Some people believe that people are only motivated by monetary reward, but I don’t buy it. While that’s important, I don’t think it stands alone as the only motivating factor. I believe people long to be seen, heard, and appreciated by their peers. That’s why at Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort and Spa our #Sales & #Events #Team has a bi-weekly award ceremony. We call it our “Simply the Best” award. It’s real simple. I set up a google form and emailed the link to our team. It has all the folks on our team listed with a radio button by their name. Team members can nominate up to two people and then they get to share the “WHY?” behind their nominations. This past Friday, the newest member of our team, William Scanland, won the award. Here’s what some of our team shared about Will: “Will hasn't been here long and has already proven how awesome he is! He does his job extremely well, and catches on quickly. Not only is he great at his job, but he's always willing to lend me a hand with trash, stocking water, moving things around, etc. Really love having him on our team!” “Will is AMAZING at his job, timely, and never annoyed with us!! (or he doesn't show it) he is always willing to help us in any way - he doesn't miss anything either, and I am so happy he isn't sick of us and will still hang out with everyone outside of work! #teambonding” “Will is such a great asset to the team! He is super-efficient at his job and always has a positive attitude!” - Excellence - Competence - Doing more than is expected - Not easily flustered - Enjoys others - Invests in the relationship! - Efficient and Effective - Positive Attitude Who wouldn’t want someone with these characteristics in their team? However, how many of us have people with these characteristics on our team, but never take the opportunity to acknowledge how this impacts us, our team, our clients? Challenge - see the good and praise it…put a system in place to celebrate your people. Praise their competence and their character! Let’s go!
