As an Executive, A Latina Executive DEIB is something I am passionate about. Diversity done right yields results!! Kudos to the companies who did DEIB right, those who embedded it in their culture (were also likely already doing it right). It's a shame DEIB was treated as a trend and as times change companies are allowing these initiatives to fall off. In 2004, in my first year in Finland, a fellow African studying here for a semester and enrolled at another European university gave me only one rule: Do not make wh!te people uncomfortable. She went on to explain ways to make them comfortable and how to appear less threatening due to our skin colour. Her best advice was to always avoid walking in groups of Black people. In contrast to how I had seen wh!te people treated in Africa and the success that followed them, I realised I was not an equal human being here and would need to always minimise myself to survive. In 2021, I remember doing my first LinkedIn post about racism in Finland after a wh!te Finnish man used the 'n' word on national TV. Remember, I and other Black people are supposed to be as inconspicuous as possible at all times. I observed upsetting conversations amongst wh!te Finns about us. It was 2021 and they spoke about us like we did not even exist in this country. The fear I had clicking "post" on my first anti-racism LinkedIn post was so immense, I did not know how I was going to survive that day or how people would treat me at work. Today I am preparing for my first online class as the founder of Crest Impact, where I will be training familiar faces from Europe that have consistently supported my posts. The good news is that I no longer feel that fear. I am sharing this to remind everyone who does not have to worry about their skin colour, culture or origin how wh!te supremacy affects the quality of our lives daily, when it demands we reduce ourselves and our basic human needs like simply being in the same room with fellow Black people. Please remember the part you are playing when you: - Tone-police us - Approach us with instructions on what to do, say or how to act - Suggest we are the problem for speaking openly against racism - Suggest our anti-racism and DEI work is less successful than wh!te owned businesses due to something "wrong" we are doing I personally know African people who would never ever support my posts. Some have even blocked me to protect themselves. I cannot really blame them even though these are people I have eaten with. People who come to my home. People who are raising children that are considered Black in this country. This is what wh!te supremacy means and does to racially marginalised people. It tears them apart to prioritise wh!te comfort. Please think about that when you make more demands about how we should carry ourselves online and elsewhere. There are so many definitions for and uses of the concept of "diversity" in business. Sometimes, we react negatively to how others attempt to impose their definitions on us as Christian CEOs and Business Owners. It is easy to be defensive and reject the overall notion of diversity. However, it is possible to reclaim God's view of diversity and apply it to our businesses. We will talk about that in our C12 North Texas business forums this month. We will challenge each other to understand the competing definitions. More importantly, we will discuss practical, proactive steps to value people with different backgrounds, talents, and perspectives in our businesses. We don't shy away from tough topics in C12.
