One Thursday morning last year, I walked into Girish Mathrubootham's office in Seattle. I was visiting Seattle for a Spendflo event and thought I'd meet him. As I walked in, I noticed him typing on his computer. In my head, I was like, "Maybe an email to investors or leadership or a presentation deck of sorts." Once he finished, he apologized for keeping me waiting and explained. "A customer escalated a question to me as the customer support representative did not provide the entire answer. I was responding to him." I was just amazed at how much this man cares for Freshworks and how he has nurtured it along the way. Building a startup itself is HARD. Building a SaaS startup in 2010 from Chennai, India, is as difficult as it could get.  Building a SaaS company from India and taking it public on NASDAQ was a dream. G (how we address him with respect and love) evolved so much along the journey, learning new things to keep himself relevant to different company stages. He showed us all the global SaaS playbook. He walked the dream of taking the first SaaS company (from India) public on NASDAQ. Today, a B2B SaaS revolution is happening in India. And much credit goes to him. 14 years of love, care, blood, sweat and tears. For Freshworks and the Indian SaaS ecosystem. Last week, Girish Mathrubootham stepped down from the CEO role at Freshworks, and Dennis Woodside took over. I've heard many great things about Dennis, and if G passed on the baton to someone, I'm looking forward to what's in store. Seeing the man up close in multiple instances has been an honor. Folks who know me know how many times I quote him. Once a fanboy, always a fanboy. G - It's been an honor. 🙏

Seen news, Freshworks got the New CEO, share price down 25%, company was not able to reduce churn and so on. My perspective around Girish Mathrubootham is different. He is a real hero. He has given hope to India, dreaming big, having the right team, passing the right knowledge to become an entrepreneur. If it didn't work out, he's holding them back. Countless SaaS companies are coming out of small places, tier 2-3-4 cities doing amazing. I have watched almost every video available on the internet about his thought process on hiring, team building. Someone who is so smart hiring a junior-level candidate and growing them well, how could he make mistakes in CEO hiring? He looked for the right people who aligned with the company's vision, business growth, people skills, coached him till the right time came for handover and will support from the back to ensure the new CEO could do well. Not sure, what happened to the media, rather than celebrating a big bold move we are criticizing. USA company having an Indian CEO is okay, an Indian company having a USA CEO is not okay 😞

As 2023 winds down, I find myself reflecting on a bold leap I took earlier this year.
