#CoffeeTalks are back with a new episode! This time we discussed the ever-important topic of #sustainability with the CEO of World Coffee Research (WCR) Jennifer "Vern" Long, who guided us through the discovery of the non-profit agricultural research organization which the De'Group Longhi has decided to collaborate with and brings together over 170 different companies in 29 different countries to promote collaborative research and development operations on a global level in order to secure the future of coffee and simultaneously support farmers. We learned about the specific areas WCR operates in and how the organization serves all of the participants involved in the coffee supply chain—all the way from the farmers to the consumers. We would like to thank Vern Long for her valuable contribution and to everyone who took part in the event. #DeLonghiGroup #EveryDayMakers #SwitchOn #Sustainability

Regenerative Agriculture: A Holistic Approach to Restore the Earth 🌍🌱 At Salt Spring Coffee, we're always looking for ways to make our coffee as sustainable and earth-friendly as possible. That's why we're excited about the potential of regenerative agriculture, a holistic approach that goes beyond sustainability to actively restore and rejuvenate the earth. Regenerative agriculture is about more than just the soil – it's a mindset, a way of seeing the world. It's about understanding that everything is interconnected and that by nurturing the earth, we're also nurturing ourselves and our communities. We're thrilled to share this video by Kiss The Ground that explores the origins and possibilities of regenerative agriculture. Co-written and narrated by Lyla June Johnston, an indigenous public speaker, artist, scholar, and community organizer, the video features a holistic approach to regenerative stewardship, expanding the idea of regeneration beyond the principles popularized in the relatively young regenerative agriculture movement. As we continue our journey toward becoming trailblazers in regenerative organic agriculture, we invite you to join us in exploring the possibilities of regeneration. It's not just about making better coffee – it's about making a better world. Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/ePjYKGbq #RegenerativeAgriculture #Sustainability #SaltSpringCoffee Mickey Mcleod. Named by CNN as 1 of only 7 'tech superheroes' to watch. Interested in all things around sustainability.
There are SO many institutions and organizations that are helping to fix the climate by shifting towards plant-based food. I started looking at one that I found posted in my feed a few hours ago, and 2 hours later I'm still finding other ones - many with great content! I'm not talking about plant-based food manufacturers. I'm talking about services or organizations (profit or non-profit) that are helping to convince others to move towards plant-based. Doesn't have to be 100%, but to move the dial on #LessMeat. Examples of two I found today: Coolfood and Greener by Default. My question to you... is there a "master database" or website or whatever that lists all these organizations? (If not, I just may have to start one!) It's boosted my optimism seeing all these great organizations (something Anne Therese Gennari at The Climate Optimist will appreciate!), but it took me a lot of time and jumping from one topic to the next to find them. Please tag anyone in the comments that you think may know of a good free and open-to-everyone resource that lists all these organizations in one place. Why would this be useful, this one source? Because I'm finding some good info and proof of concepts from smaller organizations, but as they are smaller they aren't getting the visibility that I think they can and should get. And many times that info can be built upon to share with wider audiences, which means more action, which means #LessMeat... What's that saying about going farther, faster... together? 👍 And bringing these organizations together may be helpful to Matthew Glover's idea that he posted about a few weeks ago regarding a check-off program for the plant-based industry: https://lnkd.in/d5QAdd-q Photo by Tobias Fischer on Unsplash - to represent all the info out there, but where is the ONE place to find it all?!

One of the problems in our environment today - Soil Degradation Organic matter is a crucial component of soil as it allows it to absorb carbon from the atmosphere. Plants absorb CO2 from the air naturally and effectively through photosynthesis and part of this carbon is stored in the soil as soil organic carbon (SOC). Healthy soil has a minimum of 3-6% organic matter. However, almost everywhere in the world, the content is much lower than that. According to the United Nations, about 40% of the planet’s soil is degraded. Soil degradation refers to the loss of organic matter, changes in its structural condition and/or decline in soil fertility and it is often the result of human activities, such as traditional farming practices including the use of toxic chemicals and pollutants. If business as usual continued through 2050, experts project additional degradation of an area almost the size of South America. But there is more to it. If we do not change our reckless practices and step up to preserve soil health, food security for billions of people around the world will be irreversibly compromised, with an estimated 40% less food expected to be produced in 20 years’ time despite the world’s population projected to reach 9.3 billion people. Highly recommended read if interested in #cultivatedmeat! Here is my 2021 review on GoodReads: https://lnkd.in/eGm3hCQt Now, it has been released in an updated paperback edition!
Big news: Simon & Schuster is publishing an *updated* paperback edition of Clean Meat on April 9! (Pre-order: https://lnkd.in/g3Pn7MTY ) When the hardback was published in 2018, it debuted on the Washington Post bestseller list, was widely reviewed in mainstream media, and was translated into eight other languages, many of which still are strong sellers today. The pop-sci book tells the gripping history of the cellular agriculture movement, profiling the entrepreneurs, scientists, and investors racing to commercialize slaughter-free meat. The updated paperback edition still tells those stories, but also has sections on nomenclature debate (including the book title!), feasibility debate, feedstock controversy, regulatory approvals, and more. Even now, I still regularly hear from people who were inspired by Clean Meat to join companies, start companies, invest in companies, donate to charities, etc. My hope is that this updated paperback edition will continue inspiring action by readers toward a better food future.

There's no Starbucks if there's no coffee. Our partners (employees) are at the center of sustainability and climate issues, fighting for the future of coffee. This #NationalCoffeeDay we are celebrating the efforts of all who make coffee happen, including the commitment to innovative ways in which they are ensuring coffee is still here 50 years from now. Out of the 600 lines of coffee varietals here on our farm, close to 30 climate-tolerant hybrids have been developed that meet Starbucks high-quality criteria. Six Starbucks varietals have been fully developed by our Global Research and Development team here at Hacienda Alsacia, with another four that have been developed in partnership with non-profit research centres. These varietals are shared with coffee farmers with no strings attached, shown in the Starbucks Coffee Varietals Catalog - a collection of coffee tree hybrid data and performance information that farmers can use to identify the specific needs for their farm and through our seed distribution and seedling donation programs, can receive climate tolerant and coffee leaf rust resistant coffee trees. Preview the @Starbucks Coffee Varietals Catalog in English and Spanish here: https://lnkd.in/e4H_-unu that is shared open-sourced to farmers through our Costa Rica Farmer Support Center. #Starbucks #NCD2023 #ResearchandDevelopment #Coffee

“Cost is actually not the number one hurdle for restaurants considering reusables. It’s the fear of change” This definitely resonates with our experience at Muuse. Though I’m not sure “fear” is quite the right word. I think there are understandable risks in changing operating model in a pressurised competitive industry like F&B. It’s not complicated but it requires effort (and therefore cost) to switch systems, create new processes, and train all your staff. All while making sure your customer experience stays the same. And if there’s no regulatory requirement then there needs to be a really strong pull factor to make it happen. It’s not hard to see why restaurants choose expensive single use options instead of switching to reusables which work our cheaper. How do we get restaurants comfortable with the change? Regulation is one answer, leaving no option but to change, helped by the fact everyone else is doing that too. That can work but we believe it’s best alongside infrastructure and good comms, as well showcasing some high profile examples of how it can work. #packaging #reuse #circulareconomy Upstream John Charles Meyer
The food service business is challenging and fast-paced. So it's understandable that operators may at first resist a short-term disruption like switching from disposables to reusables — even if it means significant savings in the long term. That's why the work of PlasticFreeRestaurants.org is so essential. Leveraging compelling data, sound organizing tactics, and direct funding for reusables, Executive Director John Charles Meyer is helping schools & restaurants across the country embrace reusable foodware — and contributing to a disposable-free future for all. 💚🌍 Learn more on the latest #IndisposablePodcast: https://lnkd.in/exsaFRDH _ #newpodcast #newpodcastlert #bestpodcast #plasticfreerestaurants #plasticfree #endsingleuse #betterwaythanthrowaway #reusewins #climateaction #weheartreuse #johncharlesmeyer #volunteer #lessonslearned #nonprofit #indisposable #johncharlesmeyer #lessonslearned #reusenonprofit #schools #subsidyprogram #reusefunding ReThink Disposable Center for Environmental Health

Regenerative Agriculture is one of the biggest topics in food and ag. And the seed industry is no exception. But how do we turn talk into action and make regenerative outcomes benefits farmers and the planet? I’m proud to be discussing this new week in a live event at the International Seed Federation’s World Seed Congress in Rotterdam. Along with some of my colleagues Ralf Glaubitz and Alessandra Fajardo I’ll be looking to cover how far Regenerative Agriculture has come, what issues and blockers remain, and the tangible actions that we can take across the industry to address them. If you work in or around the seed industry and are interested in scaling up the regenerative outcomes of your own work, I hope you will find the time to watch. If you’re at the World Seed Congress, you can attend in person [on Tuesday May 28, 15:30 CEST]. Not there? You can watch live from anywhere in the world: https://lnkd.in/dpX8HKEe #WorldSeed2024 #Seeds #SeedIndustry #RegenerativeAgriculture #teambayer #sustainability #Bayer #BayerCropScience #VegetablesByBayer #Seminis #DeRuiter #WorldSeed2024 #ISF100years
