2 Million members in Germany’s biggest Reddit community! 🥳 Today marks an exciting milestone for Reddit in Germany: Our biggest German community r/de reached the huge milestone of 2 Million members. 🤩 Created as the catch-all community for German-speaking users many years ago, the community has become the heart of our German ecosystem. More than 18 Million comments were shared in 635k discussions, judged by more than 375M votes. 🚀 The growth of r/de did not only impact their own community, but also planted the seeds for the rise of hundreds of communities in our German-speaking ecosystem. And as the biggest community, it is still the place for thousands of Germans to start their journey on Reddit every day. 🇩🇪 When I joined Reddit 2 and a half years ago, I was super excited for the community to reach 500k members. Look how far we’ve come! This milestone of 2M is a great testament of how the work in our German team helps more and more Germans find community and belonging. 👏 Of course, none of this would have been possible without the r/de mod team. Their dedication and passion to create a better place on the internet is probably the most important piece in this success story. tl;dr Sometimes it's fun just to have fun making the creative to advertise with Reddit for Business but even better is that it pays off. The Front Page of the Internet Goes Dark on June 12 ❌ Subreddits on Reddit are going dark, some for a few days some indefinitely. The subs will be taken private by the moderators and will be inaccessible to everyone. Recent events at Reddit serve as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between business growth and ecosystem sustainability, often referred to as the 'front page of the internet,' had open APIs, that created a thriving ecosystem of third-party apps. However, the recent decision to monetize its API - charging $12,000 for every 50 million requests or $0.24 per 1,000 requests - has been a polarizing one. Apollo, a popular Reddit app is a prime example of the fallout. To break even with Reddit's new API cost, Apollo would need to onboard 12,000 new subscribers at $5 per month immediately. The math doesn't add up, leading to the app's impending shutdown. Apollo isn't alone - ReddPlanet, Sync, and Reddit are Fun (RIF) are also closing their doors, leading to a massive Reddit blackout in protest. From a business perspective, Reddit's decision to monetize its API is understandable. The platform needs to generate revenue, and charging for API access can offset potential losses from users accessing the platform via ad-free third-party apps. However, the insanely high pricing changes have disrupted the developer ecosystem, leading to app closures and user protests - a clear indication of a strategic misstep. Monetization is crucial, but not at the expense of ecosystem sustainability. Reddit’s future hinges on whether its 60,000+ mods can coexist with Wall Street’s expectations., **One of my favorite articles about one of my favorite companies** “The imposition of API fees was meant to demonstrate that Reddit could establish a substantial new revenue stream. It also showed something else: that the risk of future mod uprisings was an enduring threat to Reddit’s ads business, which drove 98% of its $804M in 2023." Reddit’s whole strategy is dependent on the loyalty of mods. It's become evident that volunteers, who provide millions of dollars in free labor to Reddit annually, truly share control of the service. “Sometimes in charge of communities tens of million strong, the mods make the rules in their subreddits. They’ve turned the platform into one of the world’s most inventive laboratories for online content moderation, with approaches as diverse as the trouble­makers they counter. It’s easy for some people to see those mods as loud dissenting voices, but I see them as building the communities people come for.” ** “For good and for ill, Reddit has long been an island of authenticity in an increasingly artificial world: a place where real people, hiding behind the privacy of fake names, share their rabid enthusiasms, expertise, and morbid thoughts; where viral memes and movements bubble up from a primordial soup of upvotes and chatter; where a million users each donate $1 to a stranger just to make a millionaire for the fun of it; and where people with drinking problems, parenting crises, or crushing debt can find one another and compare notes on the struggle. Running a community or a multi-million member subreddit like Funny, is a ton of work Spitting in the faces of the volunteers that make Reddit work is just asking for trouble There is nothing special about Reddit except its community and the content the community created This is not at all dissimilar to mass fashion's current situation We're seeing customers abandon brands because mass fashion is alienating their customers with one size fits none generic product and content, poor quality, high prices, and no way to participate In the past, businesses could get away with treating their users as commodities and putting profits ahead of everything else Reddit and now the entire short-form video internet is built on user-generated content The company needs to put users first and focus on creating a platform that is welcoming and engaging and where users can monetize the communities they've built If Reddit continues to treat its users as commodities, it will eventually be replaced by a competitor that does The success of any business or brand is ultimately dependent on the people who use it - if the people who use it are not happy, then the platform or brand will eventually fail In the past, consumers were limited to a few major brands for most products and services and consumers had little power to voice their complaints about products or services Social media gives consumers a platform to share their experiences with the world - it makes it much easier for consumers to organize and hold businesses accountable As these trends accelerate, the command and control, profit above all else business model will become increasingly obsolete Businesses that want to survive in the long term need to put customers first and focus on creating products and services that people love You have to be deeply aware of their constantly changing needs and execute in real time because the success of digital brands is ultimately dependent on the people who talk about them online If the people who use it are not happy because you start from a place of designing products, content, and experiences from a place of bias rather than their specific shared interests, then the platform or brand will eventually fail The answer is (fashion) brand is community, not a bunch of suits who don't know anything about Gen Z girls #genz #creatoreconomy #contentistheproduct #tiktokisthestore #tiktokmademebuyit https://lnkd.in/ejd-pSUx

Reddit, Inc. is cooking their Golden Goose. At face, Reddit's 3rd Party App changes only impact a small minority of users, but those users are dramatically over-represented amongst the moderators who give millions of daily hours of free labor to the site. Moderators are losing access to crucial tools, compounding longstanding frictions and complaints of neglect by Reddit leadership. Thousands of subreddit moderators have changed their communities to be restricted or private, posting messages such as the one pictured below directing millions of users to competitor platforms such as Discord. Replacing the striking moderators is a non-starter. It would be impossible to do at this scale, in addition to shattering community trust+principles established over a decade. The subreddits protesting represent the site's most valuable content and recognizable subreddit domains such as r/science, r/music, r/funny, r/gaming, and r/aww. User metrics will nosedive today; it's hard to see how this doesn't force Reddit management to the bargaining table.
