New research alert! The Empire in Star Wars thought that their Death Star was immune to attack, but of course it had an exhaust port vulnerability that the Rebellion was able to exploit. Similarly, many organizations today perhaps don't think they are immune, but they do invest a lot in IAM processes and believe that their defences are strong (they use MFA, they must be fine, right?). Well, most organisations have a vulnerability that's as potentially lethal to them as the Death Star's exhaust port vulnerability was to it. That vulnerability? The account recovery process. Why would an attacker bother trying to phish your users' credentials to carry out ATO, when it may just be easier to call your helpdesk, pretend to be a user and get the credentials reset? At Gartner in the IAM team, the number of calls that we've received from clients asking about how to secure workforce account recovery flows has shot up in the last six months.
