A Two-Decade Adventure in F&B Excellence Having grown up in a small town, I have always been captivated by the glamour of major cities and their opulent dining establishments, which has led me to become entangled in the fast-paced world of the food and beverage sector. Every dish prepared in this colourful world is a work of art, and every drink concocted is a work of art. It's a vibrant sector where originality and ingenuity are valued highly. Every day is exciting because of the never-ending possibilities to try new flavours, the always buzzing activity, and the constantly shifting trends. But even beyond the delicious food, the F&B sector has been a great teacher, developing my personal and professional development in addition to my professional abilities. In this field, being able to multitask is essential, communication is crucial, and flexibility is highly valued. Undoubtedly, it's a roller coaster ride, with its highs of success and lows of challenges.  But one really finds their tenacity and resilience in negotiating these turns and turns. A typical week: A GM quit. We had to let someone go for inappropriate behavior. One of the stores just got hit with late invoices that we somehow missed. Another store that I visited had the same existing issues operationally that I saw two or three weeks ago. R&M for one store is so high that you can’t make it up. We don’t post things like this on LinkedIn or other social channels. We are not immune to issues and opportunities. But I can tell you one thing and that is that we have a winner’s mindset. We celebrate our wins out loud! We shine a light on all issues and we go straight at them until they are resolved. We laugh at our mistakes and make sure we do not repeat them. You've heard this one, that Howard Schultz, Founder and CEO of Starbucks said, “We are not in the coffee business serving people, but in the people business serving coffee.” I witnessed this attitude recently in the wild (in real life). While the attitude was not surprising, where I saw it and who I heard it from were surprising. A few days back I went out to lunch at Taco Bell (because I rarely eat there, right? 😉). I was pleasantly surprised to see a new location near an appointment I had. Of course, one of the reasons to love a place like Taco Bell is the consistency, you always know what you're going to get. After the cashier took my order, I asked about the new location and if it was staffed by existing employees from other stores, or if they were all new. Her response went something like this... "Most of the people who work here worked at other stores. I'm new here. I mean I'm new to working at this Taco Bell, I'm not new to working in customer service. I've also worked at..." This was a Taco Bell employee who couldn't have been more than 20. She doesn't see herself as working in the restaurant or fast food industry. She doesn't see herself as working in the growing taco industry. She sees herself as someone who works in the service industry. And that will take her far in life. A great initiative to support and uncover home-based F&B operators! One of the biggest cost element for a F&B operation is rent. In this case, the setup and cost of the space has been covered by the mall operator. Even though it is a temporary setup, these budding cooks get to operate as though they are in a home-based (rent-free) environment. They get to gain valuable experience, and even has a mentor to guide them to improve aspects of their business. And if anyone of them decide to jump into opening their own physical space after this, guess which mall operator would they first look to rent the space and get support from? For the mall operator, if they have space that is not making rent anyway, can gain new traffic based on these cooks supporters and give those who do not normally frequent the mall, a reason to visit it.
