Taking Action and Making an Impact on National Inclusion Week This week is National Inclusion Week 2023, a key date in our calendar where we celebrate inclusion and discover the transformative actions we can take to create inclusive workplaces. This year’s theme is ‘Take Action, Make Impact', which aims to get organisations and individuals thinking about their actions to support individuals in and outside the workplace. One action we have been supporting local organisations with is implementing the Recite Me assistive toolbar on their website to support everyone online. You can choose from a range of tools including text-to-speech functionality, fully customisable styling features, reading aids and a translation tool with over 100 languages 65 of which are text-to-speech. With over 1 billion people worldwide who live with some form of disability or impairment, it is vital that we prioritise inclusivity. Check it out here: https://reciteme.com/ #TakeActionMakeImpact

It’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities (#IDPD). I always feel I should post something insightful / meaningful on these days, but rarely do, but today… I’ve seen a lot of content posted that isn’t accessible to all, so just going to share a few tests I urge you to do BEFORE you sign off content as being ready to go out. These are lo-fi tests, but effective: - Watch your video with your back to the screen. - Watch your video with the sound off. - Are there parts of your video where you can only access the content by reading? Then ask yourself these questions: - Did I fully understand what was happening in the video? - Did I miss any content? Exclusion isn’t intentional, but inclusion is. Here are some tips: - Add Closed Captions and / or a Transcript. - Make sure speakers introduce themselves. - Use Audio Description (standard or integrated). - Don’t just have text only, make sure someone is reading it out. There are loads of resources out there to help you include everyone. Here is the W3 website with some tips: https://lnkd.in/ePStuEga Be intentional, be inclusive.
