My team at the The National Child Protection Task Force is made up of some pretty big personalities. Working with literal heroes can be a little dazzling at times. But there's one person I noticed the throughout our conference last week, especially while the investigative team was working to rescue the trafficked girls. Justin Cook, our CFO, didn't end up in any pictures. He wasn't ever front and center, except for when he was reluctantly called up to receive an award.
You know where I could always find him? Helping, somewhere. If he wasn't checking in conference attendees or selling t-shirts, he was stocking snacks, driving folks around town, or asking to see if we’d eaten yet.
When analysts & investigators were busy looking for missing children during the rescue, he was silently delivering water bottles to their tables.
He always makes a point to send me pictures of the media team at work, understanding that we don't often get seen while we're behind the cameras.
You don’t get to sit alone when Justin’s around. He’s the first to sit down and ask how your day has been– always.
His vision for this team is an (often invisible) guiding force of care and service and his impact reaches so far beyond the scope of his duties as CFO.
Sometimes the folks making the biggest impact are doing it really quietly. As someone who tends to fall in to the "big personality" category in pretty much every area of my life, I'm learning so much about leadership from this person. Lessons in humility and vision, compassion and support that I have to watch closely not to miss, but that I’m certain more and more every day are the backbone of our organization.
Without folks like Justin moving humbly and consistently, none of the rest works. We're so lucky to have him.
Photo from our leadership retreat in April, as he’s merely a blur in the background, constantly moving on to his next act of service in every photo from the conference last week. 🏃♂️
