30 days to distribute a donation and 90 to 180 days to distribute a match is a disservice to the organizations and communities that employees are looking to support. That's why I'm fanatical about distribution timelines. Nine months ago Groundswell unveiled an integration that allowed us to distribute 80-90% of our domestic donations within 24 hours via EFT. Well, we refused to stop there. This month we'll be releasing new functionality that covers the remaining 10-20% still being distributed by paper checks. Yes, that's right, we'll be cutting and shipping checks daily - all while continuously building up our network of nonprofits capable of accepting funds electronically. Why? Because we're not interested in slapping lipstick on a pig by recreating the status quo systems, just with better UX/UI. We're here to disrupt. The nonprofits we serve (and yes, that's how we look at our relationship with nonprofits) deserve better. Just as critical, your employees deserve better. Sometimes when I go on about how corporations can do so much more to help nonprofits beyond nominal grants, donations and volunteering, I can hear the sighs. The common refrain is that although they may agree with me in principle, bemoaning the sometimes selfish reasons that companies engage in CSR isn’t going to do any good; and at least we’re doing something. At least we're doing something....{sigh}. Any time you levy criticism at conventional CSR methods you hear the same retort— “it’s a start, a jumping off point...it’s 'both and' and 'yes, and'...the volunteering will lead to more money". I want you to ask yourself this; of all the problems you’re dealing with in your life right now, with your partners, at work, with your kids and with friends and family. How far do you think you’d get if you used those excuses on them? Now ask yourself why you think it’s ok to treat nonprofits like that. For those in the sector who make a nice living going to conferences, giving talks, convening panels, sponsoring events, tagging each other on LinkedIn, and selling software - but really are just giving palliative support for the nonprofits you use….kudos, you’ve done well for yourselves.
