In our continuing series of getting to know the great people that make up DTFS USA, learn how Magnus Johansson “mined” his way from humble beginnings in a small Swedish town to Portland, Ore., to become DTFS Business Development Specialist – North America!
✅ Describe your position and how you support our business
Our team works together with the DTFS NA ExCom (Executive Committee). Our job is a lot about creating awareness, tangible business actions to address the opportunity, and continuous improvement within the organization, but it’s a lot of project management, too, where you are kind of the spider in the web, reaching out to different departments to get questions answered and learn about it.
✅ Tell us about your background and what led you to work with us
I was born and raised in Sweden in a small town called Tjautjas, population of 200 people and located three hours north of the Arctic Circle – a bit different from Portland, Ore.
My background is mainly within the mining industry, where I held many different positions within procurement, sustainability, supply chain and construction. I was operating anything from 20- to 30-ton machinery 4,000 feet underground – again, a little different from what I’m doing now.
I went to study abroad in the United States at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and met my wife Holly. After I graduated, we moved back to Sweden to continue keep working for the mining company.
We moved back to the U.S. in 2015 and, a year later, the mining company rehired me and I became sales manager of North and South America. Later, I became the head of business development for North and South America, selling the iron ore I was once mining back in the day.
I first found out about DTFS on LinkedIn through a job ad. I have always been extremely passionate about anything to do with engines, having grown up with snowmobiles, dirt bikes, cars, trucks, and tractors. Financing trucks seemed a natural fit. I started working here in Feb. 2022, and find what we do here to be very interesting and inspiring. It’s been a fun industry to get into and I feel at home here.
✅ What was "that moment" when you realized that DTFS was a great place to work?
I think one of the strongest, kind of “a-ha,” experiences I had was about two or three months into the job. We were at a workshop in Fort Worth. Everyone around the table got to introduce themselves and said how many years they had been with the company. There were maybe 15-20 people in the room. So, I started writing down each time someone said how many years they had been with the company. It averaged out to 14.7 years. Needless to say, people stay around here for a reason.
