Passionate Perfectionist | Extroverted Introvert | I help neurodivergents thrive and businesses to think differently. Autistic ADHDer diagnosed in my 40s
With researchers now estimating there are around 1.2 million autistic people in England, far higher than the government figure of 700,000, so all organisations need to think seriously about how they can support all of their people. There are a many ways that organisations can support their autistic employees. I wasn’t diagnosed autistic until I was 44 but I speak to a lot of people who have had to wait a lot longer than me to find out who they really are. So what can companies do to help create an autism friendly workplace? Here are just a few examples: ➡️ Sensory friendly environment: provide a quiet and calm workspace with minimal sensory distractions ➡️ Clear communication: use clear, direct and unambiguous language ➡️ Structured work environment: provide clear expectations, routines, and task instructions ➡️ Training and awareness programmes (run by neurodivergent trainers) for all staff: increasing understanding and promoting a supportive and inclusive culture ➡️ Leadership: encourage open and regular communication from the very top, reducing stigma and fear Above all, remember to work directly with employees and seek their input to ensure the effectiveness of these adjustments in creating an autism-friendly workplace. Dyslexia Awareness Week is a crucial initiative dedicated to increasing understanding and support for individuals with dyslexia. In workplaces, fostering dyslexia awareness involves several key strategies. Employers can offer training to employees and management teams to raise awareness about dyslexia and its potential impact on colleagues. Implementing accessible communication methods, such as providing materials in dyslexia-friendly fonts and formats, can significantly benefit dyslexic individuals. Additionally, flexible work arrangements, like extra time for reading-intensive tasks or the use of assistive technology, can empower dyslexic employees to perform at their best. Promoting an inclusive and understanding workplace culture during Dyslexia Awareness Week and beyond ensures that all employees, regardless of their abilities, have equal opportunities to thrive and contribute effectively to the organisation. Here at Wellity we offer a range of titles ready to support your teams around this significant awareness week... - Great Minds Don't Think Alike: Creating Neuroinclusive Workplaces - Opening Eyes - Not All Disabilities Are Visible - Caring for Carers: Supporting Caregivers - Beautiful Minds: Neurodiversity Awareness For any information on these sessions, contact our team at [email protected]. #DyslexiaAwarenessWeek2023 #Dyslexia #Diversity #WorkplaceWellbeing #EmployeeWellbeing #WellbeingInitiatives #BetterEveryDay

Being a working mom, raising a Neurodivergent child has allowed me to tap into spaces of change, awareness, education and shifting the narrative through my own experiences. And as we drive Autism Awareness and Acceptance, in the month of April. It requires us to start opening up spaces in the workplace to have these conversations which will lead up to change, psychologically safe spaces. Awareness in the workplace is crucial for fostering a culture of inclusion and an environment which will be supportive. And these are some of the ways in which organisations can kick off their journey. 1. Raise Awareness, by aligning company values, ED&I policies in understanding employees on the spectrum and how to effectively support autistic employees in the workplace. Awareness can also be driven through training intiatives in the workplace. Ensuring accessibility to information. 2. Create a culture that embraces and values neurodiversity, fostering a culture of acceptance and respect. 3. Create a culture of Support, recognising that each neurodiverse individual is unique, including the support and accommodation they may need. 4. For organisations to actively recruit and support neurodiverse employees. Creating spaces for employees to belong and thrive. There is so much that each and everyone of us can do to shift the narrative within our organisations. It starts by us having these conversations, tapping into spaces, bringing all employees along on the journey…especially parents, caregivers and individuals who are neurodivergent. Through our own experiences we are able to be the voice for the voiceless. #shiftingthenarritive #autismawarenessmonth #bethechange #inclusiveworkplaces #AutismAcceptance
