On this International Nurses’ Day, I’m reflecting on the apparently fashionable concept that “employees” are some kind of inferior species in the economic ecosystem. Maybe I’ve just been spending too much time on LinkedIn, but I sometimes pick up a sense of dismissiveness towards people who work in “jobs” and “trade their time for money” etc; as if we’re not really living proper lives. This assumption underpins an endless stream of books and blog posts on “how to escape the 9-5” and become a creator / consultant / coach etc. Just search for “escape 9-5” on LinkedIn and see the endless pages come up. If you hate your job, then all power to you in finding something better. We absolutely need skilled coaches, consultants and other people Transforming Their Passions Into Opportunities, to make the world go round. But at the same time, we need to remember that the vast army of people “trading their time for money” is fundamental to keep society going. If everyone “escaped” the employment “grind” and became a leadership coach or creative, we would soon miss having nurses, teachers, shop assistants, refuse collectors, cleaners, service help desks, and so on. Someone working fewer hours for more money than someone with a traditional "job" may well be happier than an employee - but it’s not a given. Plenty of “boring” employees of organisations are living very happy lives; enjoying creativity, companionship, excitement, growth and fulfilment via their work. Others may not be so happy in their job, whether for financial, physical or psychological reasons; but that's actually also true of a lot of self-employed people and business owners. We all travel our journey, so let’s live and let live. It's not a zero-sum game; we can still laud the superstars carving their own independent, brilliant path in business AND ALSO celebrate and appreciate the valuable players serving within a hospital or other organisation . . .

2wVery true. Even as a young doctor who has worked in high patient load facilities, i cannot emphasize how important nurses have been during my training process as an intern. I certainly got to learn a lot many skills from them during my time as an intern in a tertiary health care facility. Thankyou to all nurses on behalf of interns all around the country 🙌
