Here are some real pieces of feedback I've received at work, a swashbuckling tale --
“Great year! We’re not promoting you because you’re pregnant, but good news! It’s possible we’ll promote you when you’re not pregnant anymore. Then again, it’s also possible we won’t, because babies.” [in a review discussion, an accurate paraphrase]
“You’re less emotional than most women, but not as thick-skinned as most men. A goal for the year to come.” [written in actual writing]
“In my opinion, you can sometimes take things too personally. You need to stay more objective and not inject your opinions and feelings into everything” [written in actual writing, in their opinion!]
“You did outstanding work on [project]. Make sure you’re staying patient with coworkers who may be less effective.” [uh ok, boss? Maybe make sure you’re actually managing it when people are not working effectively?]
“You have a blue collar work ethic and I appreciate that” [not even sure where to get started on that one]
Would love to hear some of your own clunkers too, if you're inclined to share. Plus Kim Scott Aileen Lee and I are sharing some of our finest today live, and you're invited. Link in comments!
