On Valentine's Day 2022 (great timing, I know), I arrived at the ER at Upstate University Hospital in the back of an ambulance with an allergic reaction. I arrived at around 8:30 PM, and although I was a bit out of it, I remember looking down the hallway to the ER and seeing about half a dozen gurneys in front of me, all with patients waiting for care. Upstate University Hospital was the only hospital in a 50-mile radius accepting ER patients that night. I waited in that hallway for maybe 30 minutes, until I was told to get up and walk to the waiting room. In the waiting room, I saw people way sicker than I was, and started tuning into the conversations. Some had been waiting since the morning. Many didn't have a primary care alternative. Everyone was exhausted and just wanted answers. Throughout the night, they brought 2 people back to the ER beds. I discharged myself at 3:00 AM when it became clear that I was never going to be seen. At that point, I figured if the allergic reaction was going to kill me, it would have already done so. I got an $8k bill for the convenience of using their waiting room. I woke up the next morning shocked by the experience. My dad grew up in South Africa, and the total lack of medical availability I had witnessed felt more in line with 1970s South Africa than with 2020s America. Great article from Syracuse.com on something that isn't talked about enough: overcrowding of ERs. People have died in hospital waiting rooms in upstate NY, after waiting hours or even days. If this sounds too fantastic to be true, I promise you it isn't. Our healthcare system is showing severe strain, and people are dying because of it. It affects lower-income communities first, and it affects those with fewer alternatives. Things have to change, and they had to change yesterday. Healthtech needs more attention, it needs more capital, and it needs more adoption. #healthcare #hospital #innovation #healthtech https://lnkd.in/e3_F_GuK

Lifesaving initiative by Wisconsin Department of Health Services: Changing the Conversation on Drugs Real Talks Wisconsin launched in 2022 as an initiative to address growing rates of substance use and related injuries by promoting conversations on the health and safety impacts of substance use in order to build supportive communities where prevention works, treatment is available, and recovery can happen for everyone. Real talks are frequent open, honest, and caring conversations about substance use and are based on asking open-ended questions, having empathy, and helping to problem solve. They are the foundation of individual and community health and well-being. Although substance use is common in Wisconsin, it’s often not talked about or gets dismissed because of feelings of shame or wrongdoing. This stigma can prevent people from seeking help. Supportive, stigma-free environments focused on hope and healing are possible. This is multi-year effort to change perceptions about substance use. Thank you for sharing Jason Fischer.
