I was not sure what to expect as a first-time exhibitor at the American Academy of Pediatrics Conference this week in D.C., but my takeaways were pretty remarkable for my profession. See 4 of them below: First of all - one thing was abundantly clear: 1. Physicians miss having access to child life specialists like they do in the hospital during their residency. Almost every doctor came up to our booth and said, "we love child life! I wish we had them in my clinic/office/outpatient setting." Secondly, 2. There is a clear gap in being able to adequately prepare children and families outside of the hospital setting for routine, but essential, procedures. Pediatricians desire to have a team member who can take on the fears and worries of kids and families during routine procedures - and help them through it. Next, 3. Empowering families with children who have sensory needs is challenging. Pediatricians know that families of children with complex medical or sensory needs require more time, adaptations and level of care. Finally, 4. Clinic and private practice staff could benefit from regular child life training to provide more trauma-informed services. Pediatricians love their team and believe that their staff could benefit from increased training to use more child life strategies to improve the patient experience. UC Davis Health/UC Davis Children’s Hospital is recognizing TEN-4 Day on October 4th! TEN-4 FACESp is the acronym that clinicians can use to identify cutaneous injuries concerning for abuse on children less than 4 yo. This day is an opportunity to improve child abuse recognition and educate!!! TEN-4-FACESp is a useful acronym to help screen children under 4 years of age with bruising to identify when a bruise is more likely to be caused by abuse than accidental injury. TEN-4-FACESp stands for bruising to the Torso, Attention to bruising is an actionable step that we can take to help identify children at risk of physical abuse and potentially improve the outcomes of these young children. #ucdavis #childrenshealth #childabuseprevention #pediatrics #cmn #childrenshospital

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states that “play is essential to development.” Websites such as theirs and Healthy Children.org are great resources for parents and caregivers, with information on physical growth as well as how children are learning through play at various ages and levels of development. When looking at charts and developmental milestones, remember that children are unique and so is their growth. Development happens in age ranges that can vary by weeks or even months. Be careful to allow a broad time frame of expectations of what a child “should be doing.” Avoid comparing children, even within a family. Charts of developmental levels and milestones:  -can be helpful in choosing safe and appropriate toys or activities to introduce. -should be part of regular pediatrician or healthcare visits. Let your pediatrician know when milestones (such as walking, talking, etc.) have occurred, voice any concerns, and follow through on any referrals or screenings suggested. Your pediatrician’s office can be a great resource or reassurance when you have concerns about your child’s development. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides information about milestones of children’s health and development through their website. Similar apps are also available through some commercial sources. -Don't be afraid to ask for outside perspective and help if you need it.
