The number of young people between the ages 12 and 25 receiving antidepressants was already growing before the pandemic. But since the Covid-19 outbreak in the United States in March 2020, the dispensing rate rose nearly 64% faster than normal, according to the study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics. “As a child and adolescent psychiatrist who has closely witnessed the impact of the pandemic on youth mental health, the results of the study are unsurprising,” Neha Chaudhary, MD, double board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist and Chief Medical Officer at Modern Health. “Young people are struggling, and it’s on us to help them. If you are a young person or have one in your life, consider checking in on how things are going. It just takes one person who cares to change the trajectory of someone’s life.” Let's prioritize mental health support for our youth and ensure they receive the care and attention they deserve. The recent study from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, featured in JAMA Pediatrics, offers a compelling look at the impact of screen time on children's mental health. Covering data from nearly 16,000 young participants, the study reveals a concerning correlation between excessive screen time and mental health issues in children aged 3-6. What stands out, however, is the silver lining: educational content can be beneficial, underscoring the importance of mindful media curation by parents and caregivers. The findings clearly echo the necessity to balance digital exposure with other enriching activities. They also serve as a reminder of our responsibility to navigate our children through the digital landscape with care, especially as social media's grasp strengthens with age. This research is a call to action—to not only limit screen time but also to foster an environment where the quality of content reigns supreme. Let's discuss: How do we effectively curate our children's media consumption to support their mental well-being in this digital age? Share your thoughts and experiences below. #ChildDevelopment #MentalHealth #ScreenTime #DigitalWellbeing Original article: https://lnkd.in/ekdRx6W3

One of TQEE’s three core priorities is getting physical and mental health and development on track starting at birth. Children’s health and development impact their ability to learn beginning at birth. Children who are often sick, have tooth pain, are dealing with chronic unmanaged or undiagnosed physical, mental or behavioral health conditions, or who struggle with developmental delays and lack the services and supports they need, are less likely than their peers to be on track in reading and math by the end of third grade. In Tennessee more than one-third of children are overweight and obese, and an increasing number suffer from chronic health conditions like asthma. Tennessee also has a mental health crisis. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Children’s Hospital recently jointly declared a national emergency in children’s mental health. Additionally, Tennessee children’s hospitals report record number of mental health cases and hospitalizations among children. Especially important to note is that in the earliest years of life, infants and young children experience a period of rapid brain development marked by great possibility and vulnerability. During this time of rapid growth, healthy development is dependent on positive relationships and interactions with parents and caregivers.

We've been hearing a lot about the mental health crisis among children. Researchers have looked at a number of reasons, from social media use to isolation during the pandemic. But a recent commentary published in the Journal of Pediatrics looked at another factor - the decline of independent activity and play for children. Peter Gray is the lead author of that piece. For years, he's been following the trend of declining mental health in kids and the declining levels of independent play. In a recent interview with Contemporary Pediatrics, Dr. Benjamin Maxwell, Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego, brought to light the escalating concerns around pediatric mental health and the increasing number of emergency department visits. This is a topic that has been gaining attention over the past decade, and rightly so. Dr. Maxwell also touched upon the role of social media in the lives of our youth. According to the Surgeon General's latest advisory, social media use is nearly universal among young people aged 13 to 17 years. The average teen is spending about three and a half hours a day on these platforms. This time often replaces 'pro social behaviors', disrupts sleep patterns, and exposes children to negative content. This is a concern that we, as a society, need to address. At Rady Children’s Hospital, the team is making strides to identify and address mental health concerns early on, aiming to prevent crises. This is a commendable effort, but Dr. Maxwell underscores that the responsibility for children's mental health extends beyond healthcare providers. He advocates for more responsibility from social media companies, government regulation, and social partnerships to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our children. In conclusion, the mental health of our children is a shared responsibility. It's not just about healthcare providers or social media companies, it's about all of us. We need to work together to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our children. For more insights, do check out the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/gan2dsdu Keel Digital Solutions. Practice.
